Battle royale games are declining in popularity so Fortnite declining is expected. The company has certainly not been financially responsible by overspending so much and that's starting to come back to bite them now. Epic Games will be fine since Fortnite is still big and they have UE but that game declining and the EGS not being as successful as they hoped is a rough combo to deal with currently.
Copying my post from the PS thread as it is also about layoffs:
Sony is closing yet another studio, Dark Outlaw Games.
The second studio that is led by Jason Blundell they open and close before even announcing a game.
Sony is also laying off a "small" amount of employees from US and UK.
And lastly it's also moving away from most of their mobile games initiative from now on.
All of the above was claimed by an user on ResetEra and got a "Yup" by Jason Schreier there.
Seems like that same user was also talking about Bluepoint getting shut down before it did too, as claimed by another poster. Dunno if it's another person to keep an eye about "rumors" or not, but as Jason "confirmed" it, it's already real IMO.
Does this mean Epic will put Alan Wake on Steam? I would give them $100 for Remaster and 2.

Sucks that people are losing their jobs, hopefully they land on their feet.
On the bright side, Fortnite in decline is amazing news, fuck that trash.

Kids playing Fortnite are migrating to Roblox, and new kids are also going to Roblox... so Epic is having long-term problems, I think they'll stop giving free games too.
Epic also has Rocket League, which maintains a steady player base, but on the other hand, Fall Guys is dead.
What this shows is you always need to create new games since putting all your eggs in one basket isn't enough and won't last forever. Instead of laying off those employees have them make new games and pump out a game every few months to keep the revenue flowing. Also, the free games for the Epic Store ain't helping. We now know whenever a free game is offered that same game gets a sales boost on Steam, so maybe Epic should consider releasing all their games on Steam and try to improve their own store.

As usual, the workers on the floor suffer the consequences for the suits at the top making bad calls.
You won't see any of the execs getting laid off.

Some might. But any exec who is smart with money can go a long period of time without a paycheck.

Where would we rate this among the most tone deaf CEO responses?
In the coming days, employers will see a stream of resumes of once-in-a-lifetime quality folks. An important thing to understand is that Epic never lowered our hiring standards as we grew, and the layoff wasn't a performance-based "rightsizing" as companies call it nowadays.
