Forums - Gaming - Would you recommend the 9th gen upgrade to someone still on 8th gen?

I would recommend 9th gen to an 8th gen user...

Yes 12 48.00%

No 13 52.00%

I'm not sure 0 0%

Total:25

Part of the thread initiative where each user posts one thread a week.

Very simple polling thread. I'm interested to know would you as a 9th gen gamer be able to justify entry into the 9th gen to someone who is still on PS4, X1X or Switch. Bear on mind only recently did half the user base os PS5 cross that of PS4.

Personally, I can't speak for Switch 2 but at this moment I could not give my honest suggestion to buy into 9th gen at these prices unless the person is a high level core gamer bordering on Hard-core with like multiple hours every day and unfortunately the prices are never coming down, games just release more broken than ever and the "next gen" vibe is gone with the wind. My likelihood to recommend goes up though as the price goes down, digital PS5 was 349 here for a bit, I could make that rec.

Ive got my gens a bit mixed up at this point, are Switch 2 and PS5 - XboxSeriesX considered in the same gen?

Let me just look up the prices of the current graphics cards...hard pass.

I don't think anybody who wants to play new games has much of a choice. Most new titles aren't being released on 8th Generation at this point.

Generations aren't very well-defined anymore, and are increasingly becoming less well-defined. Switch 2 is getting 9th Generation-only titles, but probably won't get 10th Generation-only titles, so it probably should be considered the same generation as PS5 and Series X/S.

This.  PC has MS, Sony, third party, free online, cheaper games, better sales, no generations and emulation.

And a 5060ti is $250 and matches a ps5.  For $500 a 5070 beats out the Pro.

i7-13700k

Vengeance 32 gb

RTX 4090 Ventus 3x E OC

Switch OLED

I mean, it seems like the last ones standing are the live service players that are still receiving support and new content. Very few publishers are still releasing brand new games on last gen. If anything is going to get last gen holdoffs to upgrade, it'll be GTA 6.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I'll do my best to answer, although I consider Switch 2 to be 10th gen.

If you're a WiiU user looking to upgrade to Switch, it's a definite YES. The Switch has arguably the best game library of any console ever; it has the benefit of portability; and it largely makes the WiiU superfluous, due to so many WiiU ports, many of which are improved in terms of content and performance.

If you're a PS4 user looking to upgrade to PS5, it's a lukewarm YES. PS5 is the worst PS home console, but it gets the lion's share of big AAA productions, not to mention several important third-party exclusives and the rare amazing first-party game. The line-up in 2024 went a long way toward changing this from a MAYBE to a YES. Helldivers, Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Pacific Drive, and of course Astro Bot, which I consider the GOTY.

If you're an Xbox One user looking to upgrade to Xbox Series, it's a NO. Microsoft's first-party output has been random and unreliable over the last five years. And now its console exclusives are coming to rival platforms.

Yes!

We should all just go back to 5th and 6th gens.
