Forums - Sony - Sony sues Tencent for allegedly ripping off Horizon with upcoming game Light of Motiram

Sony have filed a lawsuit against Tencent, alleging that their upcoming game "Light of Motiram" is a "slavish clone" of the Horizon games:

In the filing, Sony have asked for "monetary damages and an order blocking Tencent from violating its intellectual property rights".

Here's the trailer for Light of Motiram, for those who want to see how close it is:

As expected, we're going to see more and more of this kind of crap after Palworld got away with it.

The future of gaming, clones and rehashes made with AI tools.

China already has a long history of cloning consoles, Tencent also has a history of cloning mobile games, with AI cloning games will only become easier.

Of course many games copy plenty from other games but at least have the decency to create their own art style.

Not sure how Sony can recoup anything when the game has not even release. Also after watching the trailer, I believe there is enough difference in the game, story and mechanics that it will also be difficult for some to claim any of those aspect as trademark or copyrighted by them. Even the concept of Horizon isn't all that unique so there is that. While the game definitely apes Horizon, something tells me a company like Tencent who is very use to copying other works knows the fine line they need to thread. The funny part is that this may promote the game way more than it would have gotten before.

Wow. Very comparable imagery.

As soon as I read the title I thought to myself "Who does Sony think they are? Nintendo?"

A "We have Horizon at home" moment

For an even more staggering example, look at "Limbo of the Lost", it's probably the worst case of plagiarism in industry history.

I blame Stardew Valley, they got away with ripping off Harvest Moon. And all the Doom clones like Call of Duty. If anyone would've put their foot down on these, than we wouldn't see more of this copypasta!

Quite frankly I don't think there's enough wrong with the game. Yes, it's a clear rip-off, but my impression is that it's still different enough that Sony winning could be a very slippery slope. I'd much rather have the occasional rip-off every now and then than occasional (or worse) lawsuits for what could be minor similarities (this one isn't minor, but like I said, slippery slope).
