On the one hand, I am so tired of endless retellings of old stories, it feels like almost everything nowadays is a remake, reboot or reimagining.
On the other, Del Toro is one of the best directors working today, so if anyone can manage to make an old story feel exciting again, it's him.

Young Frankenstein was the best. I lost it when he wheeled the creature out and it started singing "Putting on the Ritz".
My favourite reimagining of Frankenstein is X-Men: First Class.
But I think the original story is quite good. Although, I don't know if any adaptations have actually tried to replicate the original framing narrative... the backdrop was Dr. Frankenstein lands aboard a ship attempting to navigate the Northwest Passage through the arctic ice with his tale of ambition turning around to destroy him. There are so many directions that they could go with the framing narrative that resonates with modern audiences, such as nuclear weapons, or something similar, perhaps a currently relevant technology like AI... although, Frankenstein reimaginings have already done AI since at least the 1980s.
I'll be curious about this film.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
I should know better than to doubt Del Toro (one of my favorite directors) and this does seem right in his wheelhouse, but I'm honestly not so sure about this one so far. I guess we'll see.

Just finished this and really enjoyed it.
The cinematography and art direction is sublime, as per usual for Del Toro, and the actors all turn in strong performances. It takes a few liberties with the story, but none that undermine its purpose.
Excellent film.
