Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - April 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 221,174 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,392,775 - Switch

Total Lead: 62,909 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 32,865,049

DS Total Sales: 32,927,958

April 2024 is the 86th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 221,174 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 3.39 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 0.06 million units.

The 86th month for the Switch is April 2024, while for the DS it is January 2012. The Switch has sold 32.87 million units, while the DS sold 32.93 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 84.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 0.12 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - April 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 93,941 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 55,972 - PS4

Total Lead: 340,073 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 5,578,014

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 5,237,941

April 2024 is the 42nd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 93,941 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 55,972 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 340,073 units.

The 42nd month for the PS5 in Japan is April 2024, while for the PS4 it is July 2017. The PS5 has sold 5.58 million units, while the PS4 sold 5.24 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 45.

The PS4 crossed 6 million in month 47, 7 million in month 53, and 8 million in month 61. The PS4 has sold 9.68 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 4.10 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

With the Switch on the verge of outselling the DS in Japan and some other comparisons looking pretty much impossible at this point. I am open to suggestions for some new comparisons to add in the near future to replace Switch vs DS in Japan and some others that don't look possible anymore.

Some comparisons that look pretty much impossible at this point includes - XS vs X360 WW, XS vs XOne WW (If CoD on Game Pass and CoD Xbox marketing don't boost sales then no way XS even hits 50M, let alone the 58M the X1 sold), PS5 vs Switch WW, PS5 vs XS WW, and the 2 Europe comparisons - PS5 vs PS4 EU, and XS vs X1 EU.

I am thinking Switch vs DS in the US could be one that works. The DS sold 53.80M in the US lifetime, while the Switch is currently at 44.98M. The Switch needs to sell another 8.82M to outsell lifetime sales of the DS. Launch aligned the Switch is a little over 5M behind the DS in the US.

Kind of a shot in the dark but I’d like to have more Japan-based charts for the Switch. Would it be possible to do Switch (>32.87M) vs Wii + 3DS (37.44M) in Japan?

A Switch vs DS US chart would be great as well!

Yeah that is a decent idea for a new comparison. I do want to add more comparisons for specific countries/regions, rather than worldwide. Right now there are 9 worldwide comparisons, 3 Japan, 2 US, and 2 Europe.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - April 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 310,857 - X360

Total Lead: 481,860 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 585,647

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 1,067,507

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 310,857 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 481,860 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.59 million units in 42 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 1.07 million units. Month 42 for the Xbox Series X|S is April 2024 and for the Xbox 360 is May 2009.

The Xbox 360 crossed 1.2 million units in month 49 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.07 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.
