Forums - Gaming Discussion - If the 9th gen consoles launch with BC in 2020, is there any reason to produce 8th gen consoles beyond 2020?

In regard to MS, we anticipate low and high end models at launch. With the goal of achieving a low and high price points likely based on varying GPU power. Maybe they could even get as low as $299 if its truly budget hardware.

Sony was vague about the specs of PS5 hardware, they may do the same.

There hasn't really been a price war this gen, the MSRP of 8th gen consoles is still $300 ignoring frequent deals. The X1S is $250 but that thing is shit so we'll pretend it doesn't exist.

With that said, it seems possible X1 and PS4 hardware could be phased out quickly when 9th gen consoles launch. Regardless, 8th gen software support would continue for years.

THOUGHTS?!

Edit: I meant to put this in Gaming Discussion... oh well...

So you don't believe that 8th gen consoles will be considerably cheaper than 9th gen consoles when they launch?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Yes. Especially considering they'll be a huge price difference between the two. Stop producing 8th gen consoles and you're just going to lose sales. Anybody that waited this long for a cheaper 8th gen console isn't suddenly gonna buy a much more expensive 9th gen console just because there's no new 8th gens left.

Bet Shiken that COD would outsell Battlefield in 2018. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8749702

Nothing is confirmed yet, but it's very likely microsoft is launching a cheap 4TF disc-less console for $250-$300 and a more expensive 12TF version with a disc-drive for $500. So for microsoft is should be no point to keep selling 8th gen consoles as they won't be cheaper.

But for Sony PS4 should be about $100 cheaper than PS5, maybe $150 if they do a super slim version.

If Sony does a Super Slim, you ll be seeing the PS4 on shelves for alot of years yet.

The NVidia RTX 2080 came out a couple months ago. Is there any reason NVidia produce other cards, as they are all weaker?

Might seem dumb, but that's exactly the kind of argument you're using here. And of course there will be a couple reasons:

  1. Much cheaper. An XBO or PS4 will be about half the price, if not even less, than their successors.
  2. The general public probably doesn't know about the backwards compatibility, either.
  3. The proposed $300 Xbox next probably won't come at launch. What's the point of having a console that's weaker than the One X when the latter would still be selling? They'd rather just make next gen games run on the X, much cheaper.

7th gen may have ended the expectation of cheap hardware at the end of a gen. If you wanted a PS3 and 360 with a HDD, I think they were like $250 until the end.

With that said, the 8th gen is nearing the end and they're still averaging $299 and even higher for the mid gen upgrades.

If they can make a PS5 starting at $299, it doesn't make much sense to continue the PS4.

From a core gamers perspective in a well paying job, no.

But from someone who can't afford a console at launch it is a god send. The price cut will mean they will be able to play games. Granted later then most people but still will be able to enjoy it.

1. That didn't really happen with 360 and PS3. They stayed expensive, especially if you wanted a console with a HDD.

2. The public will know about BC if it gets hyped and they could demonstrate how it will improve 8th gen games.

3. The big question is can they launch next gen hardware for $299. IF THEY CAN, then it makes sense to kill off 8th gen hardware quickly. I don't think its crazy to assume they could make something with X1X GPU power in 2020 for $299. The X1X will be three years old at that point. Maybe MS will be willing to lose some money on hardware given all the subscription services.

I'm going to say no. I think in reference to X1 they will try to make it a GamePass device. But I think it'll be phased out quicker than the PS4 purely because I feel it will die off quickly once the new Xbox is out.

PS4 on the other hand is still quite healthy for a device that is $299. It could easily drop to $199 over time. I believe the PS5 will come with a single SKU and therefore the PS4 family just become cheaper entryways into the PS ecosystem.

An important factor is that the PS brand is still strong outside of traditional markets, something the Xbox brand isn't. So the PS4 becoming cheaper is actually quite ideal for said markets. Therefore I think 3rd party publishers will actually release cross-gen games for longer. Indies will still target PS4, and I suspect all PSVR games until PSVR 2.0 will be PS4 titles as well.

As for BC, I doubt it is must of a motivating factor for new users tbqh. The ppl who that is targeted at is those with current PS4 libraries. If you haven't got a PS4 yet it is probably because you want it to be cheaper, so a price increase with a PS5 is not a very convincing option imho.

So yeah, I think Gen 8 devices actually have life in them, at least the PS4; X1 might not.
