Ocarina of Time is the best entry into Zelda, the best entry into gaming and the best entry into life in general.

I'd go with either A Link to the Past or A Link Between Worlds as a starting point. Just because the 2D Zelda games are easier and more simple to get into and understand than the 3D Zelda games, which are an entirely different species all together. Even Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword I'd say would be difficult for casual gamers to get into.

Actually I think that A Link to the Past would be much more difficult for casuals than any 3D Zelda game expect Majoras Mask.

Definitely, majority of nowadays gamers will turn of that game just after few minutes. :) |
It's still my personal favorite, to this very day.
The Zelda CD-i trilogy. Not only do they introduce a new and fresh take on the Zelda series, it expands on the lore with memorable characters, amazing action, and game play that is still unmatched by even today's standards. The Zelda CD-i games were truly the pinnacle of not only gaming, but of human achievement. As much as some like OoT or ALttP, they won't deny the greatness of the CD-i games. The game play is tight, the level design is phenomenal, and has a story with so many twists and turns that you'll be wondering what'll happen next every step of the way.
If you've never played a Zelda game, I wouldn't recommend the CD-i games because if you do you'll never be able to play another Zelda game again. Hell, you may quit gaming knowing nothing could come close to those masterpieces in our life time.
Any canon single-player focused Zelda that primarily uses the buttons should be a good start for those who want the most traditonal and consistent reviewed Zelda game.
So no cdi, cross bow training, warriors, fourswords, DS, motion control, or online multiplayer Zelda games. If top-down zelda is too retro (shame) then nothing on the home console before N64. And if time management isnt your thing then not Majora's Masks either.

They would probably also quit being friends with you.
I can see through your sinister plan.... and the adorable signiture. You loathe everyone who hasn't played a Zelda game before, don't you? So introducing them to the CD-i games is the easiest way to make them leave your life once and for all.
