The existence of a new “AAA” title from Tantalus Media, seemingly for Wii U, was outed over the weekend. Director of development Joss Ellis has since provided a few hints as to what the company will be working on.

Ellis teased that the game in question is a port, “but more of a complete rework for the Wii U” – think Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It’s also “for an absolute top notch publisher” and won’t be a mature/hardcore experience.

According to Ellis:

It is a ‘port’ but more of a complete rework for the Wii U: a bit like the work we did on Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut.

I can’t say what the title is but it is very exciting and is for an absolute top notch publisher.

This game will be credited Tantalus … it’s not an MA / 18 or ‘hard core’ game which ME-3 and DX:HR are.

Since the global financial crisis, games development in Australia has shifted from large studios relying on outsourced work to indie devs focusing on mobile (though this is quickly expanding to include PC, Mac and Linux). As such, it’s been a while since “Australia”, “AAA” and “next-gen” were in the same sentence together, but the Melbourne-based Tantalus could be looking to change that.

Dromble’s Emily Rogers spotted two engine programmer positions a few days ago on Tantalus’ website, however the roles have been open since early December. The page states the positions are for a “new AAA Next-Gen title”, which the company will begin work on this month.

While the job description doesn’t explicitly state the game is for Wii U, it’s the only platform, along with the Wii, that’s mentioned in the “Desirable” category. It also makes sense — Tantalus has experience working on the platform and with AAA titles, as its “sister” company, Straight Right, was responsible for the Wii U ports of Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

...What ever happened to it? Should we expect something from them soon? I looked them up, and they haven't released anything since 2012 (Funky Barn Wii U), which was a Wii U launch game. Their sister studio, Straight Right Games, did the ports for Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex which is why they reference those games, and they haven't worked on anything since either. Their on their Facebook page last January, they (Straight Right) responded to someone wondering if they would make any more Wii U games by saying "We've definitely got other irons in the fire, but it's too early to release any information about them. Stay tuned, we'll keep you posted!"

Maybe it's been canned because of the Wii U's sales. Maybe it'll be revealed this year. All I know is that I want to know already!

I think that's different. That was described as a new game while this is a "port."
