Vgchartz has the God of War franchise undertracked by 2.86 million, I know that Vgchartz doesn't track digital downloads but look at how massively undertracked God of War 1, 2 and 3 are! All have actually sold well over 4 million and God of War III has passed 5 million! God of War III is now at 5.20 million which is AMAZING!!! It's especially so for a genre as small as the hack 'n slash. I knew the franchise was bigger than Vgchartz would have me believe! Now that I've seen the real sales numbers I'm 99% sure God of War: Ascension will easily sell 6+ million.

Update: Vgchartz estimations after adjustments.

Playstation officially has another 5m+ selling franchise! God of War III + The God of War Trilogy = 5.07m sold with another 130k copies sitting on store shelves apparently. The next Playstation franchise to hit 5 million will be littleBigPlanet by the end of this year.

First things first: Was Sony reporting shipped or sold units?

EDIT: Fine, dug it myself. "Sell-in": http://smallbusiness.chron.com/sellthrough-vs-sellin-34397.html

Sony is fluffing their numbers because they want to feel better about themselves.

/Thread.

Vg charts falls within the 15% margin of error. The sales of GOW falls within those guidelines. Crisis averted.

You know what... this kind of confirms my suspicion that Vgchartz is run by 360 fanboys.

It seems that PS3 games are always under tracked, while 360 games never are.

They even got caught under tracking the MOVE when it first came out too.

I understand minor errors... but VGC are nearly negative 1 million on one of Sonys biggest exclusives!

VGC undertracked GOW 1 by 700k

VGC undertracked GOW 2 by 500k

VGC undertracked GOW 3 by 800k

VGC undertracked GOW:GoS by 400k

They are all massively under tracked. It's not just an innocent mistake.... it's a pattern on VGC.

Sure VGC only tracks sell-thru while those are sell-in numbers, but there's no way there are that many copies of GOW sitting on store shelves.

God of War 3 broke the 5 Million marker? Sweet.

All that, despite the worst boxart of all time.

The 15% margin is  for their estimates so early on with less solid info an error of that size is acceptable even if  it is on the high side , The thing is error margins tend to come down over time as  more complete sales data becomes available and adjustments are made , so 800k is a large amount this far into the lifetime of GOW3 and  falls well outside reasonable guidlines.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

I noticed that yesterday too. 21 million units sold is sweet, with God of War Ascension they will easily break the 25 million mark.

I don't think VGChartz has been particularly great when it comes to tracking long-term software sales. We usually get hardware estimates very close and software sales near release are pretty much spot on, but long-term I get the feeling that we're quite inaccurate. It's just too difficult to get decent numbers for so many software titles with only a few staff members. I don't think there's any bias to a particular console manufacturer when it comes to this either.

that will be why kinect is undertracked by about 1.5m then....  makes perfect sense.

But you know it isn't because you forgot the existence of that device for windows (don't blame you everyone wants to forget Kinect :().
