I wonder if Sony will try to position a PS Portal successor as the low-end for PS6. A streaming only device. But it would only make sense if they allowed all PS+ tiers to utilise the feature, and for digital purchases even for non-PS+ users.

Console is high-end. The handheld sitting below that. Then streaming only as the low-end (even if not handheld form).

Unfortunately the price components is going to force PS6 to be priced out of the range of most people, so I do have to wonder what choices are available to them besides that.

Wrong. Nin Wii was very successful. Where was the PS Wii equivalent? What about (the lack of) instant social media communication back then?

Video games were never a dying category. Nintendo kept investing in a platform that is pretty much their product, and is widely successful. That's not the case for physical media.

Wrong again. SNY wasn't in the same overly dominant position when they first tried to shut the PS3 Store down. Jim Ryan was also still in charge.

Sony wasn't in a dominant position in 2021?

Even if so, Xbox is mostly digital too right now.

If the majority, more so being casuals, have switched over to digital, how are you going to convince them to stop buying digital and go out and buy physical instead when SNY has told everyone they're ditching physical come 2028?... You'd be buying a dead format. Nobody is going to do that.

However, those that buy physical, lots or little, who understand the many negative consequences of this, can boycott physical all at once, and it will show up like a sore thumb since that crowd is larger than SNY is leading people to believe. Add to that again of course, heavy, consistent, social media bombardment. If SNY is too blind or to stupid to notice or understand what it means then let them eat cake. Let them find out the hard way.

Heck maybe SNY is once again arrogant enough to think they can get away with the console curse of three's this time since they've got a handheld on the way...

That's kind of the problem. Most people aren't buying digital, and Sony thinks physical is pretty inconsequential.

And you'd just be proving them right.

Physical isn't that big. It's down to about 10% of the market on PS5. A lot of those people are just going to switch to digital copies, that Sony gets way better margins on. Even if 50% of people stop buying physical, Sony doesn't care. That's what they're hoping for.

If you want to prove Sony wrong, you need to do what they won't expect, which is buy *more* physical games.

And yes, Sony is being remarkably arrogant. Apparently they don't even think they need to talk to consumers about this.

Sonys on a generational run of bad PR right now so layoffs are probably due. Start with Bungie, just rip the band aid off and close em.

Either Marathon is doing a complete 180° or the game is soon to be canned, there is no other option after the game director is out while the game is bombing.

Marathon just lost its Game Director.

Looks like Bungie just lost another senior dev in Lars Bakken. He's retiring from the games industry in general. LOVED watching him on Bungie's ViDoc's back in the day. I'm guessing his shares in the company just finished vesting, as he now lists himself as a dog walker on LinkedIn lol. You can only do that if you just got PAID paid!

Best of luck to him on whatever he decides to do next.

Aka they let him resign or be fired.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Two games that you won’t be able to 100% come 2027.

Enslaved Odyssey to the West - the Perfect 10 DLC is not available in the UK. You can grab the premium edition that’s also not in the UK physical or digitally (coz DLC by itself is region locked) from the US store for $20.

Alice Madness Returns - the first game is a free download that’s needed for the full 100%.

If physical buyers simply keep buying physical, knowing it's going away, that's going to make SNY assume more so that those buyers will mostly transition when the time comes. SNY will very likely think to themselves, 'they know physical is going away, yet they clearly want the content on the disc because they keep purchasing, so they'll likely cave and buy the content digitally come 2028.'

When do you think it has ever worked this way?

When has a company ever said they're going to invest more in a product that they think is dying, because it died faster?

If companies worked the way that you think they did, the Vita would have turned out wildly different. Sony assumed that consumers were not interested in handheld games anymore, that they had moved onto mobile. They didn't look at the Vita's worse than expected sales numbers, and assume that they needed to invest more in the Vita. Instead it was the opposite. It was proof to them, that people weren't interested.

What changed their mind, was the Switch being successful.

I'm pretty sure the reason why Sony changed course on closing the PS3 store a while back, was because a bunch of people started panic buying.

But what if that doesn't happen come 2028, and instead sales drop (considerably) because (physical) gamers stand their ground? All the while SNY has taken step after step towards ditching physical completely, like what they've done with their disc manufacturing plant and employees recently. SNY won't just be able to turn it all around instantly and have shelves full of discs again in no time.

Why wait to go through all the trouble and pain of that for both SNY and (physical) gamers when those same gamers, could boycott physical media going forward and make it crystal clear to SNY that no disc means no buy, period. That's a message that SNY cannot be dumb enough to mistake, and again, if they are somehow that dumb, then PS gamers en masse might as well abandon ship now before it completely submerges.

Boycott digital copies, buy physical copies instead. That would be showing the company that you won't budge.

You are basically arguing that if you show a lack of interest in physical media, that Sony will think that there is actually a lot of interest in physical media.

Wrong. Nin Wii was very successful. Where was the PS Wii equivalent? What about (the lack of) instant social media communication back then?

With the PS3 store closing I imagine physical games will go up in price. Probably best to start getting in those physical purchases before hand. I also learned today that Folklore has no digital version period. One game I’ve always wanted to play but £100+ is way too high to stomach… 🤔 with my own money.

It does have digital only dlc, so you better grab it if you'll already spend so much on the base game.
