I don't think the super elite have much reason to kill off vast amounts of the population.

I wouldn't put it past the US or China, trying to depopulate the world, though a war or virus though.
Maybe WW3 wipes out like 90% of the human population and 10,000 years from now, the planet is right back on track :p
Bacteria, fungus figoured out how to eat plastic, give it some time, most of that will be gone, and some of those forever compounds we poluted the world with as well.

The number is in the tens of millions for the rich and elite class. They'd have eachother. A virus would also never have a 100% kill rate, they might be able to swing something that would be say 66% effective and this keeps the human population high enough to sustain.

Another thing I can see them do if to make a certain percentage of the populations infertile with CRISPR which would trigger population collapse. Not as bad as Children of Men but enough to bring the population down. 

I'm confident there is peope in power and wealth that are or have floated these ideas. If you look cloesly you can see there are a LOT of accelerationists in power. Most people in power are sociopaths and I have no doubt that they'd kill off the masses to save themselves. My point is they could save themselves and th eplanet from Global warming and keep their lifestyles intact with Ai and robotics and that's a scary thought.
