Insomniac saying they need 5 years to create a AAA game (comes from the internal documents leaked) just goes to show how long AAA development is becoming, Insomniac is a big studio with over 500 employees and extremely efficient and need 5 years for AAA so another AAA studio not as efficient or smaller or working on their first AAA or simply working on a new IP would likely take at minimum 6 years.

It's becoming almost an entire generation to work on a single game...Coupled with rapidly increasing costs (in the hundreds of millions), the thousands of employees in total which work on AAA and the videogame industry just having one of the worst layoff years in history, it's hard not to be pessimistic about the future of AAA development, it's becoming ridiculous.

AAA in the current generation probably costs at least 3x more than it did in the 360/PS3 era but consoles aren't rapidly increasing in adoption (they have a limit of around 120m-130m and that's been true for a while now) so it's no surprise people are rushing into Mobile and PC cause these AAA investments are becoming insane.

And you'd think that would give the big companies pause and make them reconsider to put some smaller games in the cycle, but no, they are all in on the big risky games.
