Honestly, I wasn't super fond of it sadly. I think I've realized I'm not really a fan of games that build very heavily on DnD mechanics, they don't translate that well into video games imo. Kind of had the same problem with KOTOR though I did like the first one for it's story. But well the writing was fairly good and I did like Minsc & Boo (obviously), so there was some good stuff in there. It's also worth noting that I played the original and not the enhanced edition, not sure how big the difference is. |
Well yes, the turn-based mechanics of D&D aren't to everyones liking. The ways to develop the story and build an epic adventure was new for the time and as I think is still holding up well. Something I miss from many current games is that you control a party, not only a single character. That gives more in group dynamics to story in comparison to a lone hero interacting with the world. Having a group of adventurers gives the writers the ability to show different reactions of different characters. I think it has become rare these days, as most turn to real-time action and it is hard to control multiple characters in real time. Xenoblade Chronicles and the Ys series manage this challenge and I think their storytelling is better because of it.
