When Sony made the PlayStation, they picked up Sega's strategy. That was first and foremost drawing people away from Nintendo (and since the Genesis did quite well in America, Sony extended that strategy to take Sega gamers too). It can be summed up as "Your first video game system was Nintendo (or Sega)? Aren't you too old for that by now? Their games are for kids. Come to us.", so if a company that relied on taking away consumers from other companies didn't enter, then the existing companies would have got to keep their consumers.

Playstation really grew the market. SNES+Genesis=80M. The Playstation alone had more than 100M sales. N64 and Saturn added another 40M sales. So Playstation sales couldn't have consisted of former Nintendo/Sega-customers.
