Forums - Gaming - What is the big deal about E3?

I don't really get it.  Hasn't E3 gone downhill the past few years.  I heard either last E3 or the one before that they split the locations up.  I saw a few pics from some of the locations and it was pretty much dead (almost to the point where some people were wondering if E3 was finished).  Aren't there better conferences now like the Tokyo Game Show and a few others (I guess E3 is the biggest for USA).  Do they let the general public in to E3 at all or perhaps the last day?  I know a few other video game shows allow the public a lot more access/days they can go in.

I don't know a lot about E3 but it doesn't really hold any significance to me.  Sure there are game announcements and all that but it seems that companies can just do this on their own.  I don't really see the point of people arguing over who won E3 like it really even matters.  Probably most of the gaming public / casual video game consumers don't even know or care about E3.  I think it would be better if the major video game companies just had big conferences like Blizzard Con before or after E3 on their own different sites allowing their fans/public to attend (with the third party companies going to E3).  I guess the lazy game journalist wouldn't like that idea.  Anyways anyone else here not really care about E3?

Okay, well I guess everyone here loves E3 and doesn't think it needs improvement.  Personally it could fall off the face of this planet and I wouldn't miss it.  It is like the North American International Auto Show to me.  Everyone drives cars and loves them but hardly anyone gives a shit about that show.

E3 isn't open to the public anymore. I think this is the main reason we're seeing game studios and such start using other venues. Another problem with E3 is CES which takes care of all non gaming electronics. Between CES and public events, what's the point of E3 still?

I haven't payed attention to e3 for years now. I personally don't know what the big deal is either. Yet some people keep saying MEGATONS!!!! And MELTDOWNS!!!! There is NOTHING e3 will show me that would make me meltdown. I cant say that about others though.

So... have you changed your mind about E3 in the last four years, seth?

I think the internet and other shows have lessened its impact. It use to be (for me) that E3 write up in a magazine such as Game Informer was the first I'd ever heard of dozens of titles.

Now, games can be announced and known that day and other shows like PAX offer a cheaper avenue to market titles. E3 is still relevant, but it does not surprise or excite me like it did a decade ago.

It's because the industry is leakier than a Swiss cheese rowboat.

LOL epic thread revival?

I haven't cared much about E3 in recent years because it's centered around consoles that each company became increasingly desperate to keep relevant. Nothing screams "we need new consoles" more than talk of girl-boners and having Usher perform. Not that giant enemy crabs are much better, but you get my point. :p

Now that we actually have new shit worth caring about in the console space, I think it's safe to be excited this year.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

:D

Yes, I'm very interested in updated perceptions, as well.

All the gaming shows and conferences interest me. As for every developer/publisher having their own shows, that would be horribly expensive for the gaming press. It would also not be feasible for smaller developers, a lot of whom depend on trade shows to get coverage.
