I think the internet and other shows have lessened its impact. It use to be (for me) that E3 write up in a magazine such as Game Informer was the first I'd ever heard of dozens of titles.
Now, games can be announced and known that day and other shows like PAX offer a cheaper avenue to market titles. E3 is still relevant, but it does not surprise or excite me like it did a decade ago.
