I see Nintendo does not feature on that list, despite the Wii being popular and hyped. Targeting the "expanded market" does that - people in it don't know enough about technology to acquire it for free illegally.

A Wii only game won't be on that list anytime soon. Downloading console games is too unpopular compared to pc games.

I'm pretty sure only 10% of those listed multiplat games are 360 versions and maybe 0,1% PS3 versions.

0.0% are ps3 versions. They'll take too long to download and you can't play them anyway

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Believe me there are people who download those games and copy them to their PS3 harddrive. They're just waiting for some groups to finally hack the PS3.

wow, thats a stretch but now that I think about it I remember reading some posts on afterdawn where some were talking about sticking to the original ps3 firmware in case it finally got hacked lol

They should've just bought 360s if they're that desperate to pirate

How are these numbers in any way useful? As far as I can tell, these numbers include certain public torrent numbers only. unaccounted for are:

- games downloaded on private trackers
- games downloaded on irc/usenet/ftp servers
- pirated games sold at retail

so basically, these numbers have no value other than letting us know that people download popular games.

Demon's Souls Official Thread  | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka

Should I cheer for this or not???

Those companies who are going to consoles to avoid piracy are making poor decisions. Console piracy is big also. The thing that really sucks is, when there is piracy on the PC, the publishers can attempt to combat it. Just look at what EA is doing. On the console, however, if the system is hacked, the publishier has to wait until the console manufacterer does something about it.

Yes, besides, in the eastern europe selling pirated discs is still popular, especally for PS2 - some ppl just don't know how to download it, and it's easier to buy them from "pirates". That's just one download from the pirate, but hundreds of DVD's sold.

.

@joora: I remember in high school when my friend Dustin put a bunch on GB emulation on floppy disks and sold them to people. I think that is just hilarious.

And people say piracy doesn't affect anything. Even the 10 spot is easily the different between a game that makes money and a game that doesn't.

Nah, since chances are most people wouldn't bother with the game if it wasn't free.

I used to pirate PS1 games years ago, had about 200-300.  Most of which I never even played, let alone would have payed for.

wow. thats a LOT

I suppose so, I would just copy every game I got my hands on really.  I should say though of those 200-300 the games listed in my profile are games I bought actual retail copies of, which makes 59, though I probably missed a few I actually bought when adding.

I guess I stopped because I was actually wasting money on blank CDs for games I was copying and not even playing, and I suppose I figured it was 'wrong' to pirate, hence not doing it on any console since.

I will still maintain though that no company lost money from me pirating games, I bought the games I wanted, most pirated ones I would never have bought (and as said even played) and in a few cases I bought real versions after playing a pirated one.   Though I won't deny there are people who pirate games they would otherwise have paid for.

I absolutely hate piracy.

The only time I illegally download a game is when it's not for sale in Europe (as in: never will) like Chrono Trigger for the SNES.

Finally I can repay SE for the awesomeness of that game when it releases for the first time in Europe next year.

There apears to be a contradiction in your attitude.

You absoloutley hate piracy right ? but your willing to pirate in certain situations i.e the game not being availible for sale , your no different from the pirate except your reasoning is differs ; the ends still justify the means. Repaying SE at a later date with their latter releases doesn't change the fact that you illegaly obtained their software prior to that. Illegaly obtaining a developers software is not justified by buying their games at a later date regardless of your reasoning ; the burgular can't say " I stole from your house once last year but I returned everything today + $10 for your troubles" .I'll agree that it's no where  as low as pirates downloading newly released games with no intention of paying a penny to the developer but in principle it's still the same thing .

If there is any circumstance what so ever in which your a willing to pirate some one elses material then you are not only taking part in pirate activity but your are condoning it through your actions , you can't legally justify theft by promising to repay losses in the future . If you hate piracy so much you won't do it even if you had to make sacrifices to support that point of view.

Yes, I know that. That's why I put "illegally" in my post. I know it's illegal to download roms, even though I can't play the game any other way without breaking the warranty rules of the console (note: only on consoles I own, so the emulator is not illegal). Nowhere did I say it was good that I did those (maybe 5 games or so in total), nor did I say it was a righteous excuse.
