Nice choice my favorite two scores would by him would be First Blood (Rambo I) and The Omen.  He also did a lot of great scores for TV.  The Waltons main theme is probably my favorite score by him when it comes to TV.

Is it bad that I remember him mostly for the Gremlins theme?

I am not that good with names for composers or actors.

But Thomas Newman is one I do remember.

Hans Zimmer, with James Horner and Clint Mansell right behind. Shame about Horner, real shame. Morricone is another classic, still going strong after decades.

No. Because he does amazing work on everything. Weather the movies small, good, or failed. His music on the Supergirl movie is the best thing that came out of the film.

Not at all Gremlins is one of my favorite movies of the 80s I ranked it 29th out of 50 when I ranked my top 50 movies of the 1980s back in March of 2013.  Although now I would have to rank it lower a slot since I recently finally saw Once Upon A Time in America.  Poltergeist which I ranked 22nd out of 50 also has a very good score by Jerry Goldsmith.

I adore it as well. Listen to it every so often all these years later.
