EAsy question. The Japanese market was so oversaturated with the DS that the natural switch was to something new. Kinda like a bump up. And PSP Lite released in the exact right time. Right when that happen. And it was just kinda picked up.

It's really just as simple as that.

i was going to purchase a ds and happened to get my hands on a friend's psp for a few minutes and didn't bother getting the ds again
(i now own a psp phat) both great systems though
about to get a psp slim for skype
might get a ds later on

Short answer: PSP is having a flow of good games to keep the sales up in Japan, DS doesn't have that flow for now and have sold plenty number of units.

Lets be honest and look at the numbers... What gamer in japan doesn't have or has had atleast 1 DS??? Seriously now???

4 ≈ One

Because everyone already got a DS so now it's PSP's turn.

*Yawn*

Keep dreaming. The DS's time of dominance is over.

In weekly sales maybe... but you know... when it comes to actual total sales....

IMHO:

Everyone buying a PSP already has a DS. The DS played the gateway drug in this scenerio. People loved handheld gaming so much, thanks to the DS, that they went out and bought PSPs. Thus, the 90 percent overlap for PSP sales. Nobody buys a PSP first in Japan. Even the MH otaku.

In a way, the PSP needs to thank the DS for its good sales. Saturation finally left room for another item in that market.

That said, the DS's time of dominance might be over in Japan. However, worldwide, the PSP is still right there in the "barely sales anything compared to the Wii and DS" pile, and it's gonna take a hell of a lot more than Monster Hunter + Saturation + Gateway drug to change that.

I respect the PSP sales in Japan, but they aren't really that important, except as a talking point. Th DS has sold 23 million units in Japan, and the PSP has yet to break 10.

This week worldwide, the DS sold 419,000 units, the Wii sold 500,000, and the PSP sold 198,000.

The PSP outsold the Wii in Japan by 400 units, and it outsold the DS by 8,000.

In Japan, 3 of the top 5 games are DS, 1 is PS2, and 1 is Wii.

I don't know if the DS is dead quite yet. Particularly if the rumored new model is announced at E3.
