The Outer Worlds announced for Switch

Posted on July 30, 2019 by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

The Outer Worlds is coming to Switch, Private Division and Obsidian Entertainment have announced. Virtuos is working on the port.

Here’s an overview of the single-player sci-fi RPG, along with a trailer:

The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Key Features

The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.

You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren’t particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.

Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It’s up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.

Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything… except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

The Outer Worlds will initially launch on October 25, but that does not apply to the Switch version. We’ll be seeing the game on Nintendo’s console at some point after that.

Nice. Really nice. I had my eye on the game already and now it's a sure buy .

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Sweet, Obsidian seems to really like the Switch.

I'll wait to see gameplay and combat systems before I'll buy it, though. Depending on how that works, I might rather buy it on PC.

That makes me very happy. This game is from Obsidian and already shows big potential. I take this over Fallout 4 or 3 any time.

And by the way: I am happy that even that all these studios are bought by Microsoft, they still deliver their multiplatform games, even adding platforms like in this case. I was miffed by MS buying Obsidian and InXile, but these multiplatform releases makes this less of a loss.

Predictions: Switch / Switch vs. XB1 in the US / Three Houses first quarter

If we can't get Fallout from Bethesda, we can get 'Space Fallout' from the better developer. Seriously though, I did not see this coming; I don't think many people did. Even though sales are going to suffer from it being a late port, it's still a big announcement.

out of nowhere, that's a really pleasant surprise

also it's a nice change of pace for an announcement to just say from the beginning "we're bringing it to this system, it's gonna be after the launch of the other ones but we're just gonna let you know we're doing it", as opposed to what happens a lot of other times where a game is announced with a Switch version and then it's a question of will it get delayed before it launches

I'll look at gameplay first but from the first impressions, I'm glad we're finally getting the "Fallout" game I wanted for so long !

Agreed, I often see people say 3rd party support was bad on GameCube, I don't understand why. IMO it got the best third party support of any Nintendo Home Consoles, post PlayStation anyway.

They say that because PS2 had a mountain of 3rd party exclusives, and Xbox had a large 3rd party exclusive library as well. What those people don't get is that Nintendo's crappy mini-disks were preventing the lion's share of those 3rd party PS2 exclusives from being on it. Had Nintendo had disks that could have held the entire games without disk swapping those games would have come to GC. And those 3rd party Xbox exclusives were made for PC and easily ported to Xbox, because Xbox was basically a computer like most modern consoles.
