Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why is Nintendo the only one singled out with shutting down fan games?

For people asking for examples, I remember clearly there being a Chrono Trigger 3D remake being fan-made which Square-Enix shut down after they'd worked on it for like 2 years.

It might be that Nintendo has more children as fans. They might have no familiarity with the law or common sense. This is why they are still shocked when they find out it’s not legal to make a game using someone else’s property.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I always assumed people like giving Nintendo a hard time in general, because many have been predicting their downfall for the last 15 years and yet Nintendo is still here.

Nintendo has a history of CnD'ing publicly distributed Fan Games. Being protective of their IP, any unofficial game that's using pre-existing assets available for downloading or torrenting will likely be taken down. Yeah it sucks, but my question is, why is it only Nintendo getting singled out? This is actually standard with most companies. It's not just Nintendo, the vast majority of game companies take legal action against unofficial fan games. Microsoft for example, shut down a Halo Multiplayer fan-game based on the classic style. Square Enix has shut down quite a few Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy fan projects. The only notable exception to this, is Sega with Sonic the Hedgehog. But that's only because Sonic Team is so incompetent with the series, that Sega is willing to make an exception for it. So this isn't a Nintendo only problem, it's an industry-wide problem. Video Game Fan works just haven't been recognized as a viable hobby yet, so until some agreements or laws change, companies can and will take legal action. Like I said, it sucks, but it is what it is.

Honestly, there isn't enough substance in the OP for me to comment, as I'm not familiar with what Nintendo has or has not shut down. However, I do know that Sonic isn't the only notable exception.  Valve, Capcom, and Bethesda, for instance, have allowed some very ambitious projects to continue.  Not everyone shuts down projects automatically.

Yeah MS and 343 Industries are so evil.

Quote from 343 to the mod Team:

"[...] BTW, we're not 'shutting down the mod' or going after the Eldewrito crew - we're enacting action to remove the Halo Online code and packages from places it's being hosted."

Also from the Halo Online reddit:
"ElDewrito is still fully playable"

and lastly the ElDewrito Crew posted this on their website:

"On April 24, four days after we released 0.6, the few of the more active members of the ElDewrito team met with certain 343 employees and other members of the Halo Universe, including Frank O’ Conner, the Halo Franchise Development Director.  Our initial meeting, which was not under NDA and therefor did not touch on the topic of MCC at all, was about ElDewrito and a simple request that we pause development.

[...]

After that initial meeting, our small group of 5 met on occasion with 343 to discuss their future plans, gather opinions, and discuss and how they would like us to be involved in MCC on PC’s development. We have been acting as an advisory board prior to the Halo Insider program to help them shape the MCC experience. While we were brought in by 343 for our particular set area of expertise, we unfortunately have not been actively doing any technical work with them for some time now due to our area of expertise (modding) not being needed at this time. However, as Ske7ch/343 bublically mentioned in the Reddit AMA, modding is on the roadmap for a future time, and they have been focusing on bringing Halo:Reach into MCC."

Now 343 is working with these modders together. Disgusting...

Whats the problem? Companies have to be protective of their IPs/trademarks. Otherwise loss of value and recorgnition.

"Fan"games.  If you d be a fan, you d respect their right to protect their property.

It's certainly within the rights of a company to protect their property but the idea that a well-made fan project will result in a loss of value or recognition is generally untrue and, in most cases, probably the opposite.  We have examples like the Elder Scrolls and Fallout right in front of us, where fan-made content has only increased the value of the IP and big fan projects keep people coming back.  Fallout has some absolutely massive fan projects coming up, like Fallout: Cascadia and Fallout: Miami, which a lot of people are excited about.

Sonic Generations and Sonic Colours were good games!  So were the Sonic Advance games actually.

Yeah Sonic team have put out shitters too, but people always seem to forget the recent good ones.

Ether way back on topic, Sega does what Nintendont.

Sony want to make money by selling art, Nintendo want to make money by selling fun, Microsoft want to make money.

Nintendo created their IP and own it exclusively. They don't owe anybody anything. Nintendo is a business not a charity.

The games you listed are 8-18 years old, not really all that recent.
