Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Furukawa Says Nintendo Could One Day Shift Away From Console Development

Well I´m not surprised. We are living so many changes and looks like consoles is going to be a thing of the past. Sad to face but that´s how it is. It´s evident that Nintendo have something in their minds about their present situation. But don´t think to much. Just enjoy your consoles while you can. There´s no point in worrying too much.

Since the iPhone is declining in sales, it’s time for Nintendo to step in.

I see a lot of people betting on game streaming but I'm pretty certain that's not the way we're going to go.
1. Console sales are still on the up. The market is clearly not saturated for traditional gaming consoles.
2. Game streaming services already exist and 3. These services continue to be in a niche position. Save for a few enthousiasts, they haven't caught on in years.
3. Games are like books, content that is just not suitable for streaming. Music and movies lend themselves well to the mentality to having a vast collection of media to consume on a whim and in a moment. Books and games are something you put significantly more time investment in and thus are better to have in a personal library. Books, like games, have streaming services and just like games, these aren't mainstream despite having existed for years.

So no, game streaming is not going to be a major thing. But what do I know, I listen to music on vinyl, I might just be resistant to change.

I reckon this is why people see console gaming moving to mobile. That technology gap is shrinking and it offers a bigger difference to PC gaming.

But it's not going to. Mobile gaming and console gaming are two totally different markets. People who occasionally play a game might do so on their smartphone (as was done on GSM's in the past). No one is going to say "my smartphone is good enough, guess I don't need a console".

So no, the mobile gaming and console gaming markets will continue to exist next to each other.

Mario on playstation and xbox? why not? They cant compete forever with financial power of ms or the brand "Playstation".

Imagine a day In which every device (as small as you want) would be powerful enough to deliver any kind of game.
Well, a chip on tv could run/emulate the games of current and previous gens. They don't need a own hardware anymore, they would sell only accessory.
Well, but if they choose to not use the same hardware on tvs, they will build their own, but the technology will allow to put the processor on the controller and run the games on it. Stream it on tv, or put a screen on the controller, making it a HH.

It's inevitable for the big 3 to all stop producing hardware at some point.

Maybe, but the thought of it really bothers me. It's like a big part of my life getting swept under the rug, all because of the influx of smart devices.

I always said Nintendo should have been the ones inventing the iPhone back in the day. It was the natural evolution. They could be selling a smart device where they make first party and get profits from apps and games sold on it. They would be the richest company in the world now if they did.

Looks to me like they're competing just fine on that front, Switch is matching/exceeding in some cases sales of Playstation 4 at the same point in its lifecycle and outselling the XBox One at equivalent points.

Why not Master Chief and Drake on Switch?

If streaming services ever take off, it's gonna be curtains for Playstation and XBox physical hardware too, not just Nintendo.

I think he's saying that they would move away from home consoles and not to just mobile phones. What I understood is that he might want to expand on smartphone games but what he ultimately means is something like a streaming service as all industry leaders talk about once in a while

As the technology gap shrinks between mobile and console, who wouldnt want the ability to take their games on the go?

i dont mean phone gaming, i mean handheld gaming.

Yeah, because that game is in the iOS appstore and the Google Play appstore and ain't streamed. The game is in the digital stores of Apple and Google (advertisement, visibility) and uses Apple's and Google's services (download traffic, updates, handling of all payments...).

With streaming Sony games are staying in the PSN, Micosoft games stay in the Xbox network/marketplace and Nintendo games stay in Nintendo's network/eShop).

The devices are ONLY for input of the controller data and output of the streaming data. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo don't have to pay TV manufacturers for outputting console games on the TV-screen, do they?

Well games as a streaming service is still a terrible idea. It means delayed button inputs, no actual ownership of the game on the players' part, and the service can be axed at any time leaving the games lost forever.

Have you tried project stream? That is very much a good experience for RPGs right now. Imagine 10-30 years from now where the world internet speed averages have increased exponentially and that issue is gone. I do agree that not owning your games suck but digital games do the same. The third one depends highly on the success of the company I guess. I think the physical console market will shrink but not dusappedikinda like traditional TV. There will be a niche of less consoles sold and less discs made but it won't disappear for at least 40-50 years in my opinion and we'll all be senile by then unless we're <10 years old now
