Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation Classic is out & receiving "Do Not Buy" recommendations (did Sony even develop it themselves?) *updated 12/5/18

Yeah... The Library of those 20 games is kinda dog shit... Final Fantasy 7 and Tekken 3 is about the only thing on there worth having.

This isn't about what I think, it is about how you are limiting the scope of what Sony actually did to be competitive during that gen. Would things have been different? probably. To what extent we will never know.

What you think is most certainly relevant. You disagree with my assessment that the PS1's domination of Gen 5 was due primarily to Nintendo's mistakes, which also entails the tacit claim that Sony's success is mostly if not entirely due to their own efforts. Either Nintendo's choice of format for the N64 was the main contributor to their massive loss in market share or it wasn't, and considering that said choice resulted in nearly every big third-party game coming out on the PlayStation and not the N64, it would seem that it was. Yes, Sony actively courted third parties and made a console that appealed to them. No, that alone didn't net them the win. The N64 being cartridge-based is why that generation was so lopsided. Decisions regarding hardware design do matter

I agree with you. Funny enough, history repeats itself. The PS4 wins because the competitors slipped.

Simply doing everything right is rarely enough in and of itself. The competition has to be doing something wrong.

So, no, doing the right things isn't enough in and of itself.

I honestly doubt Sony was able to do that all by their lonesome.

If you had only expressed yourself this way from the start.

I agree with the above of course, and I don't even see how it's debatable. But tbf it's pretty far from the gist of your first post (below).

And the PS1 owes its success to third parties

It owes its success to Nintendo, whose mistakes are what allowed the PS1 to succeed at all.

the PlayStation succeeded because Nintendo screwed up

What to expect for 99.99.

It's a Plug & Play.  At a $99.99 price-point, a Plug & Play is expected to be much better than this.

I guess that statement was rather poorly phrased. My bad.

The point is, Sony's massive success wasn't entirely due to their own efforts. Yes, they did a lot of right things, and they could have made it competitive even without having the lion's share of third-party exclusives. It was only trailing the N64 by about 20% for the Jan.-Aug. period of 1997 in the U.S., which shows potential for filling in Sega's old spot as a close competitor to Nintendo even had they lacked big exclusive killer apps like Final Fantasy VII. But the competition wasn't even close for the generation as a whole. It was a total blowout in Sony's favor. And it was Nintendo's choice to go with carts that resulted in that generation being so lopsided. "Sony dominated because Nintendo screwed up" is a better summation of my original point.

Everyone else but Sony screwed up. Atari, Sega, 3DO, Nintendo... three of which chose CD format.

About 5-10 more games, and a better selection.

Seems like this thing was just a bad move overall. Haven't really hard any positive news on it. Doesn't seem like its worth the $100 price tag atm. Not sure how they got it wrong, on paper ''PS1 mini classic'' sounds like a sure fire thing.

14 year old mobile hardware (PSP) runs PS1 games much better than the PS classic, the Nvidia Shield TV and even the PS3.

Damn it Sony. You needed dual shock controllers, no 50hz games and better selection of games (No Tomb Raider, Crash, Soul Reaver, TM2 or Spyro WTF). If you did these three simple things, the PlayStation classic would've been GRREEEAAATTT!

The PlayStation Classic is now available to the general public, and it has been receiving some savage reviews on YouTube.  In between my creation of the post and the release of this mini-console, it was revealed that Sony opted to use the PAL versions of 9 out of the 20 games on the system.  This equated to slower framerates than North American gamers remember playing their games at back in the day.  Remarkably though, even the NTSC games on the system are said to have noticeable lag and sluggish controls.  The system does not even come with a power supply.  Sony is relying on the consumer to use their own USB power supply to power the system that Sony is selling them for $100.  The problem with this?  Some purchasers are winding up with fried systems from trying out different USB that the mini console wasn't designed for.  Which is what can happen when the manufacturer relies on the consumer to supply their own parts to make the product they bought operable.  So many corners have been cut with this mini console, it's an easy no buy for me.  I really hope this thing bombs rather than cash in on unsuspecting people's nostalgia.  At a $100 price point, there is no reason for the end product to be of a lower quality standard than the Atari minis from AtGames.

Not only is it a cash grab, and a slap in the face to PS4 owners. It is also a absolute peice of garbage. Running on a MediaTek SOC just like Sony's Bravia's. This thing doesn't feel like a SIE product. It screams of Sony Electronics. This is like the Xperia Play all over again. Kenichiro Yoshida and John Kodera are freaking clueless. If this is the kind of stuff they are willing to put out, it makes me scared for the PS5.

As I said before, I will not give them a dime for this. I have no problem repurchasing my games on PS4 if they don't want to offer disc or PS Classics support. I would pay $9.99 a pop for games running at 4K/60 on my PS4 Pro, with Trophy support. PS1 on PS4, just like the PS2 on PS4 titles they have released here and their.

I hope they wake up real quick and relize just how terrible of a move this was. They need to get an X86/Radeon emulator going and start delivering PS1 games to PS4 owners next year, to make up for this disgrace of a product.
