Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 to PS4 graphical leap

Aside from the ear, and some slight differences in the skin/hair visually it is the same. On a technical level the two models are vastly different, but on a visual level it barely looks improved. A two inch wide 100 sided cylinder looks exactly the same as a two inch wide 10,000 sided cylinder, in a 3D Modeling program. That is especially true once you add smoothing groups. Diminishing returns are a huge problem, when it comes to graphics.

Edit: And that ear only looks better because of a poor retopology job. Add another 2K polys to those ears, and the blockyness goes away. No need to triple the polycount of the entire model.

There is a big difference, especially when you open the images up full size.

Diminishing returns is a thing and PS2 to PS3 processing power jump was much bigger than PS3 to PS4 so in the end you would be less impressed with the difference...

Still when really looking at it, it's easy to see the jump

People shouldn't judge a new console capabilities from its first games, it's difficult to fully and efficiently use a new console HW power at the beginning, devs must learn to do it, and also dev tools, libraries, system libraries, drivers and OS get improved and optimised with time.

That's common knowledge.

Look at Uncharted and The Last of Us, it's like night and day how much it evolved during the generation.

Look at FF VII to FF IX, crap man that is a huge difference... even bigger than LoD to LoD2

There is definitely difference, saying that leap from PS3 to PS4 is definitely smaller compared to leap from PS1 to PS2 and from PS2 to PS3, and that's understandable, I accepting even smaller leap going from PS4 to PS5 compared to going from PS3 to PS4.

PS4 is a huge leap upon PS3 in terms of graphics and performance. PS4 graphics are amazing!

It doesn't matter if you are judging the height between a 3 foot and a 4 foot man or a 6 foot and a 7 foot man. The difference might seem drastically more impactful from the 3ft man to the 4ft man but at the end of the day a foot is still a foot.

And LoD2 still doesn't exist =p

The difference between the PS2 and PS3 was much more noticeable then the PS3-PS4 jump. Even now I go back and play GOW 3 or TLOU on the PS3 and I am still amazed how old the tech is but how it still holds its own

The problem was that people were comparing the best-looking late-gen PS3 games to early-gen PS4 games, so it's no wonder the difference wasn't huge. If you did the same with PS2 and PS3, the difference wouldn't suddenly look that huge anymore. Obviously the difference between PS2 and PS3 is bigger than that between PS3 and PS4, but it does put things into perspective a bit.

Anyway, I haven't seen the issue too much lately, as common as it used to be.

I think the PS3's improvement over the PS2 was immediately noticeable. The problem the PS3 had was that people were expecting it to dwarf the Xbox 360 the way the PS2 did to the Dreamcast. When people saw Gears of War 1 up against Resistance Fall of Man, it left a bad taste in their mouths. A game as beautiful as Heavenly Sword couldn't be downplayed!

To be fair... By the time the Playstation 3 came along, games were already pushed up a notch in the visual department thanks to the Xbox 360 being on the market earlier, so developers were already transitioning.

There is a leap but i wouldn't say huge. Thinking back to what games like uncharted series pulled off and some other titles that had amazing lighting and textures. It certainly wasn't the jump that we saw from ps2>ps3. But the sad thing is i was hoping the ps4, this gen would bring huge advancements in AI and levels with so many background details and huge immersive worlds. Maybe ps5 or ps6 we wil lstart seeing ground breaking experiences, not just a new coat of paint.
