Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Lack of new games on Switch

I'm really enjoying Switch as an Indie machine.
Seriously, fuck the mainstream studios. They won't stop making the same thing over and over again. Indie games at least give me something fresh feeling.

Nintendo is one of the only major companies in the world willing to dump a lot of money and time into things that disrupt the norms of the industry... While Mario Odyssey isn't that sort of game, Zelda: Breath of the Wild very much is - it does a lot of things that people find "shouldn't be done" like breaking weapons, the ability to go everywhere you can see on the map, and removing gigantic long dungeons, and it works.

Well, with your criteria being that narrow, is not hard to see why you have problems with game outputs.

I guess about the only thing that fits would be Kirby Star Allies, unless a 70s meta game is too low for your high quality gaming taste.

I do think that Kirby Star allies isn't good enough.... I did buy and enjoy Planet Robobot but Star Allies just look bland artistically, is based on coop with IA, and the game is designed so badly that it seems you can defeat boss by doing nothing and letting the IA win alone.

I think that Nintendo made a mistake by not realeasing FE this spring and filling the first half of the year just with Kirby, WII U port, and a toy for child.

in the following 6 weeks this are the games releasing that I think may be worth a purchase

22th May:  Megaman Legacy Collection 1/2, Runner 3

24th May: Bloodstained Curse of the moon, N++

25th May: Pixeljunk Monsters 2

29th May: Street Fighter 30th Anniversary, Ikaruga, Legend of Kay, Fallen Legion, Harvest Moon

5th June: Blazblue Cross battle

8th June: Sushi Striker

15th June: Lego incredibles

22th June: Mario Tennis Aces

26th June: Lumines, Ys VIII

29th June: Crash Bandicoot, Wolfenstein II

Their is a ton of other games releasing but I hardly know anything about those others so I did not include them.  And ofcourse more games can be announced, I think early this month we didn't knew about Ikaruga and Blood Curse of the moon.

I just find it funny when people say there is nothing to play while having such a narrow criteria. No indies, no ports/remasters, no multiplayer games, no niche Japanese games, no casual titles, no multiplats, no E rated titles, no classic games, no cartoony games, no arcade-y games, no games under 80 metacritic.

It's just their attempt at quality control ...

The best-selling Smash game is at 14.58M copies shipped. SSB4 is not a single platform game and the series is consistently growing. We already know Fire Emblem, Smash, Yoshi, Yokai Watch 4, Mario Tennis Aces and some other games are on the docket for 2018. Then there are expected games like Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, etc. coming up with the possibility of certain third-party hits like Fortnite. And since Nintendo’s offering is only growing as opposed to competing with their previous year, I don’t see why you wouldn’t expect to see growth.

I'm not talking about the growth of the console. The subject arrived on individual games reception, their fanbases size and social media impact. And about that, the entire list you gave combined maybe isn't even enough to compare to Mario Kart. Only Pokemon is comparable to the size of Mario and Mario Kart, the rest is much smaller. It doesn't mean that the console will sell less though, since the Mario games are available for it anyway.

Super Mario Galaxy, the best-selling 3D Mario, only did 12.77M units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a port of a game that only sold 8.4M copies in its original format. Obviously MK has amazing legs and MARIO is the most successful franchise ever, but Nintendo can easily rival its 2017 showing in popularity (though quality will be hard). Pokemon S&M did 16.1M. Animal Crossing New Leaf did 11.69M. Smash 4 did 14.58M copies. If Animal Crossing, Pokemon and Smash all come to Switch (along with other titles like Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Yokai Watch 4, Fortnite, Star Fox, etc.) they’re going to crush their 2017 showing.

OT: We’ve already had Splatoon 2, ARMS, BOTW, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors, Labo, Kirby Star Allies, etc. along with tons of great third-party content (Yooka-Laylee and South Park: TFBW are my faves) and there’s a huge library still set to come. There is no drought of great games on Switch.

Such a convoluted post.

You talk about relevant titles, yet you exclude Mario Tenis, Fire emblem and Yoshi.

Talk last year was filled with high caliber titles, but the ones that made the difference for Switch was Zelda (multiplat), MK8 (port), Arms(stretching a lot), Splatoon 2 and Odyssey. Not even mentioning that you conveniently ignore obvious announcements at e3 just to prove your point

Your Wii U comparison you list Luigi U and Wii Fit U as relevant and original titles and talk with a straight face that there's no significant difference with the first 14 months of the switch? Guess is not about quantity after all lol.

We reap what we sow

There would also be Splatoon 2.

No, that's basically it. And don't count on E3, every year Nintendo's E3 is underwhelming. Nintendo Switch is a nice device, but it's just way behind the PS4 at this moment, maybe in 2 or 3 years they'll have 10 exclusive great games?

EDIT: Reading the thread, I get the feeling that Nintendo fans don't need that much to be satisfied, just throw a 3 year old port here a lame Kirby game there and everyone is happy. I love Nintendo, my first game was Super Mario World and until the PS3, I was a Nintendo-only gamer, but after playing games that are actually good, I can't be bothered to play a game like the new Kirby or to be excited about stuff like Mario Tennis. I feel like Nintendo also can't be bothered to release big AAA games or games from different genres because fans really are ok with anything they throw. I don't regret buying my Nintendo Switch, I mean, it's my Zelda machine and I love BOTW, but I feel totally different about Nintendo now that I do have the newest Nintendo console, but I also have PS4.

I know how you feel. I was in that same boat some years ago. Although I grew up with Nintendo, for many years I didn't care about the games anymore. It was mainly in the 7th gen. I got the Wii shortly after launch but barely even played with it. Instead I got the PS3 and thought that is the hot shit now. I loved my PS3. I thought I would never get back to Ninty. But in 2016 PlayStation games really got boring to me. After having played mainly on that platform for 8 years, everything felt like it was the same. I was underwhelmed by Uncharted 4, I got bored by The Last of Us and today I can't be bothered to even try out the new God of War. No, two years back, I had the urge to play something different. It didn't take long until Nintendo came to mind. They had all these interesting titles that couldn't be found anywhere else. So I got myself a 3DS and had a blast playing Super Mario, Animal Crossing and many more games. I was especially amazed by the perfection in gameplay. I completely forgot how well Nintendo does stuff like that and just two years ago I had no idea that they still achieve the high standards they had in the 90s. I was so blown away by the games that I got a Wii U shortly after and loved it. Got the switch at release and guess what, I play mostly on that system.

I still like my PS4 Pro and all, but it's mainly my VR machine right now. PSVR is awesome, even though it seriously lacks good and especially longer games. I still love it. But when it comes to flat games, I got hooked to Nintendo once again. There's so much stuff I missed and I can't wait for the new stuff that will come soon. Maybe you will get back to Ninty too after a few years. But don't mind it too much. Enjoy whatever platform you're playing on. Just know that you don't need low standards to like what Nintendo offers. It's just alwas a subjective matter. Which games are fun to you personally depend on so many factors. Some care about a good story and those folks probably won't get too happy with Nintendo. People like me care for great gameplay and great gameplay only. Nintendo has a shitload of stuff in that regard.

As for the topic at hand, how the hell do you all find enough time to play all the games coming? Seriously, I'm still not done with Breath of the Wild at this point! I haven't even touched Bayonetta 2, just rushed through the first one. Not through with Mario Odyssey and I bought Stardew Valley without having touched it. Then there are evergreens like Overcooked. That game is always a hell lot of fun when I play it with my son and wife. I don't know, there's no way I could ever catch up to all the games coming out, althoug I play with the switch 1-2 hours a day. Well, most days anyway. Sometimes it's just not possible because boring work and stuff. =P

That's fair. I'm tired of cartoonish and indie games, just like I was tired of big AAA multiplatform games for a while. That's why I'm probably not excited about Nintendo anymore, maybe it will chance once I play enough games on PS4. I just wish Nintendo could release their tradicional games + different things they never tried before, more western, more "mature", but that's impossible at this point.

Switch is my default machine - but then I love the range of indies and don't have a PS4, so currently playing Dragon Quest Builders and Stardew Valley with Axiom Verge and Subsurface Circular to play. Ys 8, Crash N'Sane Trilogy, Dark Souls, Mario Tennis and Octopath Traveler pre-ordered, too.

EDIT: Also still dipping into Splatoon 2 and Kart 8 DX for online.
