Forums - Gaming Discussion - VR is not a gimmick!

With Sony so invested in VR I think they should have kept Ready At Dawn.

There's a LOT of weasel words in your final, highlighted statement there.

So many that no matter what actually happens, you can claim you were right.

What's the difference between a fad and a gimmick?

I don't think either one is a gimmick but if you like VR then that is great but for me  I am more interested in the future of AR.

Like I said before that video of that dragon flying through an entire stadium filled with people all happening in the REAL world blows me away.  I am watching both VR and AR but right now AR is much more exciting.

So it either staring at a dragon flying in your little room or being sucked into a huge virtual world and finding dragons to hunt?

I think I know what I want.

The potential is huge with VR when it comes to gaming. But hey, whatever float your boat...

You misunderstand.

I am talking about AR tech as a whole is more exciting. One day people will be have some kind of AR glasses on at all times. Not in a small room but where ever they are in the world. I think that Magic Leap and Halo Leans are already totally wireless with built in computers.

VR is for people that want to be taken to a virtual world.

AR is for people who want to differently experience the real world.

I would like to play Alien Isolation in VR but thats about it. Most of the things I have played are either trashy shovelware (90% of steam library) or not really that impressive (GT)

I can only say I like to play my PSVR from time to time.

And watching 3D movies on it is a totally different experience than only using 3D glasses on theater or TV, much much much more enjoyable.

Well that was problem really. I bought one launch day (psvr) and yeah they just didnt launch any games for ages. Rush of blood was cool and RE7 but yeah RE7 and the horror game with yellow dress woman cant remember its name, they made me feel sick.

You bought in and sold out at the wrong time, I did the same with the Pro and regretted it, I'm now just waiting for a time to rebuy one. The library of games has much increased and will double in the next 12 months, along with that many games have been updated to sort motion sickness or general graphical issues. Also, getting over that motion sickness is easy and well worth the hassel, I only bough in in decemeber and it took a week or two for motion sickness to set in but when it did it peaked quickly, I took regular breaks afterward everytime I was feeling it coming on and in just a few days I was playing the most hardcore of loco motion games at top speed just like I would with a ds4, I fact, Skyrim VR's movement system has become so responsive it outright beats a normal dualshock and I just can't wait to see an arcade MP FPS like COD play in this thing, the skill ceiling will be beyond that of a mouse and keyboard.

Hmmm  now skyrim and fallout 4 in VR could be totally amazing. The motion sickness was a problem though. But yeah i rushed to buy one on launch day, then i was waiting for ages for Paranormal activity to launch. I think ill look out for one for cheap, esp as now i have a ps4 pro and 4k tv.

We really need Rockstar to put their foot down and make GTA6 a VR exclusive. We need Activision to be bold and bring COD to VR exclusively. These big players need to set the standard, and show people that VR is in fact the way AAA game development is going. They have the power to make the mass market excited about VR, and I hope they come out guns blazing with Gen 2 AR/VR. For every 1 gamer they loose from the shift to VR, I can easily see them picking up 2 or 3 more. Done right VR is an expereince, and that reaches a lot bigger audeince than a game ever could.

We demand Rockstar and Activision cut the udders off their cash cows, abandon their core demographic, dictate to their audience how to play a game, and boldy say "FUCK YOU" to anyone who dares complain about it, much less refuse to buy the game and the additional hardware required to play it.

You have a ton of ideas you keep espousing that are heavily, heavily rooted in pure delusion, but this one is one of the worse.

The core gaming community has shown time and time and time again that they're only willing to accept changes that fundamentally makes gaming better. VR clearly is not one of them.

Since the topic is about gaming, something that you guys seem to forget.

AR in gaming = gimmick, so little you can do in a room

VR in gaming = not a gimmick, all first person games is far superior in VR. You need to see it to believe, something that some posters in this thread afraid to try.

AR might be ok outside of gaming if lucky...

I disagree, look at Pokemon GO, AR has near as much possibilities as VR and I think will also be where PC games like god games, rts, 4x and table top simulators go even down to the humble solitaire. As I said in a post above that one depends on creativity far more and less on already established game genres, both are exciting and AR is sure to have more mass appeal but is further down the road, atm.

In fairness, most people turn off the AR on Pokemon GO, mostly because it makes Pokemon harder to catch. Not the best example.

According to Oxford Dictionaries:

Gimmick: a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

You can change the definition of the word to meet your meaning, but that doesn't change the meaning of the word.
