Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Vita has all of the features you wish the Nintendo Switch had.

Everybody hated Nintendo so I loved Nintendo. Now, everybody loves Nintendo so I guess I have to throw some hate their way.

First things first, the only thing that matters when it comes to a gaming console is the games. If a console has the games and the gaming experience that you're satisfied with, everything else is just extra. I could list a dozen features that the Xbox One and WiiU had that the PS4 didn't. It doesn't matter. People wanted the PS4 for its library and power. I can't argue with that.

-The meat of this topic-

The Switch launched in March and it's currently the fastest selling home console in history. I bought mine on day one and I love it! However, there's a list of features that I wish it had. I made a list. Strangely enough, when I look at my list of most wanted features, the PlayStation Vita had almost all of them!

  • Bluetooth headphone support?
  • Wallpapers/Themes
  • Built in voice chat
  • Web browser
  • Netflix and other streaming services
  • Folders
  • Lock screen password/PIN
  • Camera
  • Backwards compatibility
  • Downloadable library of old games
  • Cross Console purchases
  • Messages
It's pretty crazy. I mean the Vita launched like five or six years ago and yet the newly released Nintendo Switch can't compare in terms of features. Am I the only one a little bothered by this?

That's not really a revelation. It is known that the Vita failed because it was too good.

And unfortunately, goodness comes at a price.

Maybe cause Nintendo focused on making games for the Switch rather than Sony making it look like their xperia phones.

Or it could be because of that. Sony makes Xperia. So they have the people to implement these stuff

I'm bothered by the fact that Mickey Mouse is such a financial successful character over Bugs Bunny. While Mickey is a character beloved my many by appealing to their inner child persona, Bugs appealed to the dual comedic intellect of both child and adult.  Bugs doesn't get the attention and recognition he deserves.  It's all about the mass and less for the individual.

And I'm saving up for a Switch this summer while I still game on my PSTV.  The PSTV is still a very viable platform while I own a 3G OLED VITA.

I loved the PSP for all the extra features it had in a time before smartphones took off but when the Vita came out, it all started to feel redundant. I'd like to see gaming features expanded on the Switch but otherwise I don't really care all that much since there are so many better alternatives now a days for media features.

Well, most of those features wil come eventually, although it is dissapointing they're taking so long to bring a web browser and the VC. Also, do people really want a camera on their consoles? The 3DS and the Vita had it, and it really did nothing of note for either of them.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I'm also bothered by the fact bugs bunny is too underrated these days, someone get him back in the spotlight.

Anyway I guess features some of which most people already have got easy access to from even their TV's themselve, these days aren't as valued as all the critically acclaimed 1st party support Switch has been getting. I think they'll come eventually anyway.

Yeah all those features are great n all, and if the vita had like BotW, SMO, Skyrim, MK8 etc i would have bought one. Unfortunately it doesnt so i didnt.

Seriously though wish it had YT/NF

It's a fair point. Vita has some really cool features and pretty advanced innards. I'm glad to own one.

That said, for me personally, a lot of those features remain unused. For me, a video game system is there to play video games. The rest is gravy.

I don't think I ever used streaming services or even the browser on Vita. I basically turned it on, loaded a game, played that game, then turned it off.

However, there are a few points where Vita scores huge points over Switch. The PS1/PSP back catalog on Vita is great. I own a system where I can play Final Fantasy I-IX on the go, which is pretty awesome. Nintendo needs to bring VC to Switch already.

Messages and voice chat. Why is this not on Switch? I can't schedule a gaming session, or even say "hi." It's weird.

But apart from VC and voice chat/messages, I don't find a lot missing from Switch. I guess for me the most important "feature" of a gaming system is its games, so I'm willing to forgive Nintendo's hybrid for missing folders or Netflix or Bluetooth, etc.

Unfortunately, it seems neither the Vita nor the Switch have the feature I wish both would have: a decent battery life.

That being said, I do agree with some here that most of these features feel unneeded because it's simply a system to play games on. If I want to watch youtube or navigate the web, I'll just use the computer. Good for those who like these, though (well, not in the case of Switch since that's what the OP is complaining about but...yeah, you get what I'm sayin').
