Depends on the demand then. If it's still doing well, a replacement won't even have been announced. At the end of the day, it's the consumers who ultimately decide, albeit indirectly,  which consoles get a replacement.

But releasing it in 2021 will help steal ps5's thunder and get it's multiplats.

Nah, i don't think that's likely. Nintendo like to try and keep their consoles going as long as possible. Well, handhelds at least. I think this will relate to the Switch too. Unless they react to a hybrid pS5 which isn't very likely and even then they could probably do a mid-gen upgrade.

Hopefully by then, Nintendo will be getting tailor made 3rd party exclusives and still a few multiplats.

No, the PS3 sold more than 360 from day one worldwide.

And yes, this month it actually WAS a HUGE timed exclusive which let it reach those numbers. PUBG! Including according bundles..PLUS a new console model PLUS an ongoing 199,- deal.

Are you really that stubborn to keep riding that ridiculous "exclusives don't matter" train?! If anything this month (in the US) proves that exclusives DO matter.

Umm they don't because PUBG isn't an exclusive.. entirely unless you are saying PUBG is better than majority of PS4s 1st party lineup in 2017.

Maybe the X1 outsold the PS4 based on Price and marketing? Price and marketing isn't exclusive just in case you forgot.

Exclusives only help market your system. However you can release a 1st party Exclusive game and if your competition markets a Big AAA 3rd party multiplat that's on both systems, your competition is going to win the sales.

It all comes down to marketing. One day you will understand this.

This has probably been gone over already, but if what Magicpork on ResetEra is right, then we can make some approximations for year-end sales based on his ratio for combined Q2-Q4 sales. We know that the Switch sold at least 3.9M for the Q2-Q4 period, so that gives us the following for the others:

PS4: 4.29M
XBO: 3.59M
3DS: 1.87M

We never got 3DS numbers for Jan. or March, but we do have Q1 figures for the PS4 & XBO, which means we can estimate that they have sold, respectively about 5.3M and 4.2M for 2017 as a whole.

If true, this also means the PS4 had an absolutely massive drop both month-over-month and year-over-year for December. In fact, it was enough to prevent 2017 from being the PS4's peak year in the U.S., though 2017 as a whole was still up from 2016.

It would also explain a good chunk of the PS4's year-over-year decline globally from Dec. 2016.

Sony really should have kept the PS4 at $199 during the entire holiday period.

I won'd update my charts until we get something a little more concrete.

3DS is over 2 million in 2017 for sure, no way it sold less than 130K in the first quarter of the year.

That's really good for a 7 years system!

3DS sales

2011 ~4.1M

2012 ~ 3.6M

2013 ~ 3.8M

2014 ~ 2.6M

2015 ~ 2.4M

2016 ~ 2.5M

2017 > 2M

I think they were smart not to for a few reasons:

1.It would've taken thunder away from other hardware they were trying to move (Pro, Pro Battlefront, PSVR)

2.Many customers would've opted out of buying Battlefront slim bundle if there was a $199 standalone available, why pay $50 more for a game you don't really want?

3.They met their sales projections for the year, why further cut into their profits just for bragging rights?

A very smooth drop.

You're a hypocrite. So you're saying the exclusivity, timed or not, is not part of marketing?! After you just said it actually IS?! I'm done discussing with you...can't stand your constant spinning anymore.

You just have a poor understanding. This entire time my point is made where you don't need 1st party exclusives to outsell your opposition hence this NPD. They help but there not necessary. Where's the spin in that? Apart from everyone making excuses as to way the X1 outsold the PS4 which only proves my point even further, they did it without 1st party games.

You can sell shit if you have perfect marketing for it. That's a lesson in life.
