Forums - Website Topics - How do you feel about the current state of VGC? - A Survey

VGPolyglot said:

Now, this is mainly a thread of personal interest, rather than an official VGC survey. However, after having discussions with others I am wondering what the state of VGC is according to the community here, and thus I have a few questions that I'd like to ask:

  1. When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
  2. How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
  3. How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?
  4. How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?
  5. How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
  6. Fill in any other information/thoughts/feedback/reception here
Thanks to all who post!! I'm curious to see what the results will be.

1) I joined in September 2016, after maybe 2 years of lurking.

2) I enjoy the site, and most of the community.  But, I started coming here for the sales charts.  They're apparently making a bit of a comeback, which is nice.  Since they're been on the back burner, I'd say my overall interest in the site has waned a bit.

3) I check in 3-5 times per day.  95% of my time is spent in the forums.

4) I think the community is pretty good, by internet standards.  There is way too much fanboyism though.  That stuff really bothers me, as I own and love all consoles and PC.  I've owned nearly every major system since Atari 2600.  I'm a fan of gaming, and I don't like to see gamers talking shit about other parts of the community simply because they prefer to play on one plastic box over another.  It is ridiculous.  That's life with modern gamers on the internet though.

5) To be frank, the changes have not significantly impacted my opinion of the site.  I am hopeful that sales charts will become a more significant focus of this site that says its about sales charts though.

6)  I appreciate all of the work that you and all of the other guys do to keep VGC going.  If any of you are ever in Northern VA or DC, I'll buy you a drink or two.... unless you're too weird for me to hang out with.

Oh additional thing... if you are writing a post and you end up converting the last part of your post into spoiler text, how the f are you meant to change it in such a way that you can add more to the post without having to delete the final portion which is spoiler text? The only work around I've found for that is to copy paste a page break from elsewhere which doesn't have formatting on it, is this a browser issue or a site issue?

Just feels terrible when a forum doesn't have a fully functional text entry system in place.

Write out your whole post first, then highlight the parts you want to spoiler and change the style at the end.

Aye like I said though, if you put the last part of the post as a spoiler text... then decide you want to add something else to the post. It's pretty much impossible to remove the style from the page break because of how it has been coded here. It's basic text entry on a text based forum, it shouldn't have such a flaw with the one additional style offered in posts. It's just a headache and punishes people who would like to add spoiler text to their posts, it is actually so broken it encourages people to leave in spoilers for things.

Star Wars The Last Jedi was a fine movie and the internet needs to calm their tits about it.

The forums are great but the sales info has turned into a disappointment. I remember when sales were updated constantly. I wish we could get back to that.

1. When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
I joined for the game statistics and sales, including weekly and overall lifetimes sales of both games and consoles. I love the way I can see what amounts are sold in which countries too. Also as an 'old skool' 3rd/4th gen gamer I love the ways I can customize my profile especially adding games to my profile and seeing them on shelves as a collection (I would love it even more if I could re-arrange the positions of games, and have shelves that automatically re-arranges them in order of consoles/date added/date released/alphabetical/user-edited/reviewed, and the user-edited one should be default). A Console Collection would be really good idea too ;)

2. How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
I love the more badges I get the more years pass, I't makes me feel wise and powerful XD. I'll have my 10th anniversary next year... and I can't wait for my FFX's X badge :)

3. How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?
The main page with the game/console charts. Also the game and console databases. I also check the news and forum posts daily, but I haven't logged in much till recently but I've always been here everyday, just about ;).

4. How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?
Everyone is always up to date and industry savvy as usual. The news and forms are constantly updating with fresh information everyday. I love all you users, especially 'old skool' Nintendo Fanboys like me :D

5. How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
I've noticed a change in graphics and news over the past years, and thats great. I remember when this site was just bars that measured the 360, PS3 and Wii. I witnessed the Wii sales take off from day 1 then created my account a year and a half later.

6. Fill in any other information/thoughts/feedback/reception here
Some of the box art to recent games need to be added in my games collection (the box-art in the game database part of the site is all up to date (I think) but not in the user's game collection part). I don't know if uses can add their own or if they can only add game box art to the games database part of the site.

Also, one last thing, it's difficult and sometimes impossible to add new games to my game collection because when I search for a game to add (For example 'Worms' for the PS), and 5 different Worms games come up and I can't find the exact version cos it only displays a maximum of 5 games.

1. Lurked in 2012, joined in 2013 - I was thinking of getting a Wii U for the kids, and after reading a few shaky reviews, wanted to get a deeper feel from the gaming community as to whether or not it was worth it.

2. Initially, I got fascinated with the numbers and the way they were calculated. There was a huge debate about them going on at the time, and I remember ioi actively posting on one of the threads about it (and wiping the floor with some of his critics). Secondarily, some of the trolls posting at the time became a source of amusement for me (I'm not proud of that, btw  ) My interest in the site waned as the databases and numbers were being updated less and less, and the gaming related discussions were becoming less relevant to me. Political threads seemed to be on the rise but I can only take so much of that. Now that the numbers are being updated more regularly, once more I'm looking forward to checking out the latest figures, especially with the Switch, and the discussions are starting to interest me more.

3. I check VGC on an almost daily basis, but I only look at the home page for the stats and hot topics. I rarely go into the forum section, but now that the numbers are being updated, I am looking at them again.

4. As some are aware, I don't represent the demographic here, not by a long way. I haven't really connected with anyone here, so from my perspective I don't think the community is any better or worse than when I joined, just different. It was livlier and more anarchic back then, a bit quieter now, but that's not necessarily a bad thing IMO.

5. Just the fact that someone is doing something about the site can only be a good thing! Feeling the enthusiasm coming from the team about getting the site working properly again with current sales info is just great.

6. See all of the above.

1) 2012. Mainly to see sales numbers and follow the discussions about it.

2) It surely increased. The numbers are quite decent (acceptable error margin in most cases).

3) Daily. Main page, just check the hot topics and news.

4) It's a great community and allows more open discussions than competitors like Gaf. Other forums also are normally full of people that are absolutely clueless about sales form anywhere outside of NPD. The community feels more active as years pass by.

5) About time. Numbers were way too late, site was a mess. It's now slowly improving and numbers are kind of back in track.

6) I know ads pay the bills, but they really should tone it down. The site would be more respected if the ads did not looked like The Pirate Bay or a porn site. Also, Chrome will start to automatically block intrusive ads, so I don't even think these aggressive advertisement will be profitable anymore.

You seem pretty down on yourself. You feel you would be better off being permabanned? And that not only is the community is worse, but this in part because of you? Ha. One of my favorite posts in recent memory, just because it's so bizarre. See? You're not so bad.

In all seriousness I think I'm one of several users who probably aren't for the best of VGChartz. Not a big deal to say it honestly.

Do I think I'm the worst? No, I'm positive there are worse. However, I do believe I put posts on here that probably won't be appealing to outsiders.

I think that you're just fine. Every side of something needs someone to defend it. I like actual discussion and sometimes that involves butting heads.

Thanks guys for the feedback

  1. When did you join the site, and what were your reasons for joining?
I started visiting the site a few years ago because of the sales. In 2016 I joined the forums to rant about Trump.
  2. How has your interest in VGChartz evolved as your time here has passed?
I didn't post much until the What's your favorite Pokémon competition. In December-January began posting frequently in other threads too.
  3. How often do you frequent/check VGC? Which sections of the site do you visit most frequently?
Several times a day. Way too much actually. I usually just visit the front page to see if there are any interesting new threads, articles or sales data.
  4. How do you feel about the community here? Is it better/poorer than when you first joined?
It's only been a year, so it's still pretty much the same.
  5. How do you feel about the current changes/fixes/updates being made on VGC?
Most of them have been pretty minor. Some are good, others I don't really care about. I still don't like that the threads I've read don't turn orange though.
  6. Fill in any other information/thoughts/feedback/reception here
Although I don't care much about most of the changes that have been made so far, I appreciate it that you guys are trying to imrove this site. Hopefully VGChartz will have a bright future.
