What if the Switch sells fewer units than the 3DS? Will it be counted a FAIL?

I think anyone with such questions should refer to this:

Ca. 40 million more units to catch that 3DS... it all depends if Nintendo will release a back-compatible Switch 2 in the coming 2 or 3 years.

You know what I think makes this necro bump extra tasty. The fact that "fail" is in all caps. Not only did the OP have an opinion on the matter, he decided to emphasize it with disdain and vigor. It reminds me of this photo...

In fairness to the doggy, he might still have gotten that loudmouth bird.

I don't see why. Bumping old predictions that turned out to be way off is standard practice on VGChartz. It serves to remind us all not to be too sure of ourselves.

Back before the Switch released, I predicted it would sell under 20 million lifetime. I freely admit that was an awful prediction and if anyone were to bump that and laugh at my pessimism, you know what, fair enough.

Right, clearly the Switch has not been a failure for Nintendo.

Will the Switch still be doing well in three years, though? That's what I'm curious to find out. I'm not sure if it will have a long lifespan, and if it follows suit with what the Wii did, then sales of it's competitors will overtake the console in the next couple of years. This is why I still think that a hardware upgrade would give the console added life, and I think the way they would need to do it is by allowing developers to tune their games such that both the regular Switch and Switch Pro can play the same games, but with the Switch Pro playing them at a higher resolution or higher whatever.

I really don't think a more powerful Switch is needed. People aren't buying it for its graphics. All it needs to stay relevant after the release of PS5 and Scarlet is the same thing that kept 3DS relevant after the release of PS4/Xbone and DS relevant after the release of PS3/360; games.

I don't think Switch needs to be replaced before 2023 honestly, it makes no sense to cut it short when its so successful.

By then the Switch should already be past, or very close to pass the 3DS.

Also, why do so many people think Nintendo will replace the Switch so soon? There's really no reason to do so unlike the previous consoles (Wii was falling so much that it needed replacement, and the Wii U never catched on in the first place) so why would they? We are in the Switch's third year and still no pricecut anywhere in sight as it's still selling like hotcakes. In fact, Switch is outselling last year by quite some margin already. And that's all before we take the Lite into account.

Exactly, it makes zero sense for Nintendo to give a system selling at a similar pace to the PS4 a similar lifespan to the Wii U.

Replacing the Switch with a full blown successor in 2021 would be one of the dumbest moves they could possibly make.

Having an opinion like "I think the Switch is a bad idea and will not sell well" or even "... sell worse than the Wii U" is a normal. And if you are wrong, when you accept it and move on.

But when someone starts a thread with caps, says "The Switch will FAIL because no COD", we need to remind them that their opinions aren't facts and, quite often, don't have anything in common.

Well, this post aged like milk in the heat of the Arizona sun.

I think it will do well, simply because it's a handheld and it offers different types of gaming experiences compared to Sony and MS. They are basically in different markets where Switch players are mostly interested in simpler games and classic JRPG's. However, as a home console the Switch can't really compete, especially when next gen hits. And since the bulk of the Switch owners also own a ps4, we will probably see a drop in games sold on the Switch when the ps5 comes out.

Best selling PS4 games

GTAV
COD 1
COD 2
COD 3
COD 4
RDR2

Those games aren't available on the Nintendo Switch, why would Switch be affected by the console that primarily played third party games? PS4 and XBO are the ones that will be affected the most by PS5 and XSX.

2019 sales figure of PS4+XBO = ~20m
