What direction do you think gaming is headed in the future?

Right now we have tons of different kinds of video gaming and each with its audience and innovations.

Which sector of gaming do you think has the brightest future?

Perhaps dedicated VR devices will take off?

Or will dedicated AR devices will become the new thing?

Maybe cellphones will finally evolve and include dedicated buttons and sticks?

Perhaps a new take on tablets will include a mouse ball and physical keyboard on the back?

Will laptops get more popular?

Could desktops pushing 8k gaming win over gamers?

Could home consoles bring something unique to the table?

Will handheld consoles make a comeback?

Will hybrid consoles become the new norm?

Or could something else surprise us? (maybe something crazy like a gaming coffee table to play digital board games with physical game pieces you place on the display)

VR by far.

As skeptic as many are, VR still has the most potential by far. Just how long it takes to really flourish remains to be seen, though. It may still require some significant advances in not only the hardware but the input first.

VR, though I really, really dislike it, I can't shake the feeling that, sadly, that's where the industry is heading. I think is an isolating as hell experience though.

Probably VR but I don't expect it for a long while ...

It's the only sector I imagine which has any potential given it's age ...

can someone explain to me why people say VR ?

ill say switch is on the right track it can be almost everything from a console hybrid to a laptop and yes even as a VR headset in the near future lol

I'm rooting for home consoles as this is still the main place for hardcore gaming (together with PC gaming of course). But I have to be realistic, portable gaming is gaining, hybrids are threatening to conquer more ground and VR while not crushing it just yet seems to have an obvious huge potential.
And there is of course streaming that is coming up and may just take over, which is a concern because as the future of gaming it would mean we don't own our games anymore and combining games streaming with games as a service rather than a product (meaning more micro-transactions, Lootboxes etc) is like our worst possible nightmare.

I say Hybrid consoles. It's the natural progression and you can kill 2 birds with one stone(3, if we're counting VR which hybrid consoles like Switch can do, albeit in a limited capacity). Mobile chips are becoming increasingly more powerful and will soon match current gen consoles. I mean there are some that already can match the PS4 but it isn't in mass marketed consumer electronics at this time. I vividly remember myself saying "This is the future of gaming" while watching the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer last October, and I stand by that claim. It's elegant, it's multipurpose, and it's feasible.

I think vr will be a a thing, but not in the gaming sector. It will be used in museums, hospitals and schools, but i don't think it'll be the next step of videogames.

To me,hybrids are the logical conclusion. It offers the traditional home console experience while being an practical handheld. And with the evolution of the technology, power will not be a problem in a few years.
There's no cons,really.

I'm going to say this again.... It's all about the software.
