Never heard of it.
I have listened to it over 1000 times and counting. Despacito is my favourite song of all time.
If you need anymore proof that our culture is degenerating....
Normally I completely understand why some songs are as famous as they are, I'm even good at predicting which ones will turn into a hit (both songs and albums), but the success of this song in particular baffles me. I'm honestly still trying to figure out what makes it special. I mean, it sounds like other 9000 songs sang in spanish. Even from a melody standpoint the song is pretty lame and samey... it brings nothing new, it's not sang by a notoriously singer, it's generic, shallow and boring. I think I'll never understand.
Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Those stupid millenials and their music! One day they're gonna bring back the antichrist!
Gosh, the past generations were so much better with their wars, genocides, famines, mass rapes, lack of education, poor hygiene, low life expectancies, sexist mindsets, and miserable lives.

um... it probably just had more money thrown in marketing and it caught on? That's how this kind of music goes anyhow. |
Nah, I find that hard to believe. Why would it have more marketing than songs from wealthier/more known artists?

"Despacito" is the greatest Spanish song of all time, 3.2 billion views on Youtube.
"Gangnam Style" is the greatest Korean song of all time with almost 3 billion views on Youtube.
"See You Again" is the greatest movie theme song of all time with 3 billion views on Youtube.
3 billion views is clear proof of success and confirmation of a song's greatness.

It's not about having more marketing, but having enough to make the song a considerable success, and from then I think it's more a matter of timing. These things just catch on if they come at the right time - people are especially drawn to a new hit that is unknown. Wealthier/more known artists will hardly have as big a hit as this just because when people know what it's about, they might not watch it. I mean, if someone shows you a new song from a really well known artist, chances are if you don't care you just won't bother, but if it's something you've never heard about going viral, you might wanna check it out just to see what it's all about. |
I know that, but even then I still don't get it. There are tons of similar stuff from unkown artists. It must be interesting to study such phenomenons (like Pokémon Go last year, for example).
