What is your favorite method for aiming in Video Games?

Mouse 30 46.15%

Analog Stick 15 23.08%

Gyro 6 9.23%

IR Pointer 9 13.85%

Head Tracking 1 1.54%

Touch Screen 0 0%

Joy Stick 2 3.08%

Track Pad 0 0%

Track Ball 1 1.54%

Other 1 1.54%

Total:65

Fun to see that people's preferences vary almost as much as the options that are out there. :)

I myself prefer the good old dual analog sticks, because it requires the least movement and gets the job done.

I think it would be quite interesting (as an alternative) to see a traditional gamepad with the right analog stick replaced by a trackball.

I think the increased precision and still relatively small form factor would be a great fit for the current gamepad's shape, and for games that need a little tighter aiming. (I have seen a prototype*, but I don't think any have made it to retail)

IR aiming. I really liked it in Zelda Twilight Princess. Not sure if Skyward Sword had the same system, I think it had something different.

I think it is quite fascinating, with how many ways have been engineered and utilized to aim in video games. It is probably the most diverse in terms of controller interface approaches.

There are all sorts:

- Joystick

- Mouse

- Trackball

- 4 button camera

- D-pad camera

- Shoulder buttons - (left/right aiming)

- Analog stick

- Gyro aiming - (like a few PS3 games with six-axis stuff)

- IR pointer aiming - (a la most pointer based aiming on the Wii)

- Touch screen - (finger/pen with absolute or relative aiming)

- Hand tracking - (some Kinect/Eye Toy Games)

- Touch pad - (finger used for laptops (relative), pens used on wacom pads (absolute))

- Eye tracking - (did any games use this yet?)

- Head tracking - (VR headset tracking the movement of the whole skull)

- …And probably a lot more I forgot…

So, even if it is the most popular or not, which is your favorite method of aiming in video games?

Are there more ways to aim in games that I forgot?

Edit: Added Trackball to the list ;)

You should put up a poll with more popular options on that list so we can see the numbers.

Generally, I like a nice mixture of gyro motion and analog controller. The second analog stick is good for less accurate, quicker movement while gyro is best for actually aiming at and hitting targets. IR pointer control comes in at a close or decent second, depending on how well it has been implemented.

Thanks.

The mouse is always the most precise, have trouble aiming with sticks, since I'm not used to it

IR pointer, easily. Games like Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, Sin & Punishment 2, and RE4 on Wii still have the best aiming I've played; fast, fluid, intuitive and immersive. Going back to dual analogue feels like going from running freely to using crutches.
