Fun to see that people's preferences vary almost as much as the options that are out there. :)
I myself prefer the good old dual analog sticks, because it requires the least movement and gets the job done.
I think it would be quite interesting (as an alternative) to see a traditional gamepad with the right analog stick replaced by a trackball.
I think the increased precision and still relatively small form factor would be a great fit for the current gamepad's shape, and for games that need a little tighter aiming. (I have seen a prototype*, but I don't think any have made it to retail)
