I think it is quite fascinating, with how many ways have been engineered and utilized to aim in video games. It is probably the most diverse in terms of controller interface approaches.

There are all sorts:

- Joystick

- Mouse

- Trackball

- 4 button camera

- D-pad camera

- Shoulder buttons - (left/right aiming)

- Analog stick

- Gyro aiming - (like a few PS3 games with six-axis stuff)

- IR pointer aiming - (a la most pointer based aiming on the Wii)

- Touch screen - (finger/pen with absolute or relative aiming)

- Hand tracking - (some Kinect/Eye Toy Games)

- Touch pad - (finger used for laptops (relative), pens used on wacom pads (absolute))

- Eye tracking - (did any games use this yet?)

- Head tracking - (VR headset tracking the movement of the whole skull)

- …And probably a lot more I forgot…

So, even if it is the most popular or not, which is your favorite method of aiming in video games?

Are there more ways to aim in games that I forgot?

Edit: Added Trackball to the list ;)

IR-pointing like Wii or mouse.

Well, personally I'm the most used to the analogue sticks. However, I have a very hard time adjusting to inverted controls.

Motion/Gyro controls for me, great in Splatoon as well as aiming your bow and arrow in Zelda Botw.

If we're talking FPS, then definitely mouse. Anything else I'm fine with Joystick.

Mouse. Nothing else comes even close to that level of precision.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Headtracking. Fast, very precise, almost felt like cheating in RE7 lining up headshot after headshot.
Second favorite Move/Aim. Just as fast, just a little less precision due to drift.
Third favorite Mouse aim, good old reliable but you need to find that balance between precision and speed.

Least favorite, analogue sticks. I got used to it, took a while. The only method that still relies on auto aim. When you're doing fine adjustments by strafing I would not call it a good aiming method by any measure.
Actually analogue sticks are tied with track pad for worst. My laptop's track pad sucks.

Mouse>anything else

I regret making this my username, I made this name when I was 13 years old

Life could always get worse, you could be a mod for Neogaf

Keyboard + mouse. I can not for the life of me aim with a controller. How some people do It I will never understand!

Nintendo Switch FC - SW - 5152 - 6393 - 5140 Please feel free to add me :)

Well, the best one of course, mouse. It's the quickest and most accurate.
