Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So what's the problem with New Donk City?

Does New Donk City fit in Mario Odyssey?

Yes it does 137 76.11%

Nnnooooooooooo!! 43 23.89%

Total:180

Two reasons actually. First, Mario looks completely out of place next to realistic human characters since he's supposed to be a human as well, and second, the setting reminds me of Sonic 2006, and that's never a positive thing.

"It seems that Nintendo can't please anyone these days."

Is this ... a joke thread? And here all I've been reading the last few days is, "Mario Odyssey is going to fight Zelda FOR BEST GAME EVER! YEAH! NOTHING ELSE HAS A CHANCE!"

Huh.

Yeah, they also said Xenoblade 2 will take best rpg with Ni No Kuni 2 coming out...

No excitement? The announcement trailer has 18m views and the e3 trailer is at 11m. Nothing but praise.

Haters exist- just ignore them. Can't please everyone, especially those looking to be negative

Completely unrelated to the thread, but I really hope we get to go to Beanbean Kingdom. So much potential there!

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

"Odyssey...yesseee!" - worst lyric of the year, maybe the decade.

I think Nintendo has made a lot of errors in the tone of this game. It feels too far on the cutesy side, and things like New Donk City seem lazy - like Barkley says, if Mario, Pauline and Donkey Kong all come from New Donk City, why are they cartoonish freaks while everyone else is an ordinary person? It's just wrong.

These complaints seem trivial because you love Mario so much that you have blinders on. I love Mario too, and I'm going to buy this game, but I'm afraid the general public sees Bowser in a white and pink tux or Mario mixed in the "real world", and thinks, "Not for me, why is this so weird / kiddie?"

I remember defending Paper Mario like this way back in the late 90s. Paper Mario is awesome and I still like the cartoony style, but it hasn't done anything to make Mario or Nintendo more popular. Neither will Odyssey. I want more than a fun but weird 3D Mario - I want Nintendo to kick butt and expand the popularity of Mario and Switch.

Well, with the reception the game's getting, and judging by preorders... I don't know what the hell you're talking about. This is expansion, for both Mario and Switch.

He recently posted a thread that explains the entirety of his misplaced worries. Don't be confused.

I saw the thread after I posted. Yeah, shouldn't have bothered.

No problem...? It looked awesome to me, and I've hardly seen any negative comments on the game so far.

I would actually like to know what kind of negative reception is out there for Mario Odyssey, especially those who have had hands on experience. That would be an interesting read.

Its a bit jarring having Mario interacting with the city and it's inhabitants, but I think as long as the game emphasizes the visiting different worlds/dimensions type of theme and doesn't overly rely on that one area, I don't think it will be too weird.
