Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo has a realistic shot at returning to #1 this fiscal year - RESULT: Nintendo back on top (21.45m), Sony second (19m+)

Which company will sell the most consoles in the fiscal year ending March 2018?

Sony (by more than 3m) 260 27.84%

Sony (between 2-3m more) 52 5.57%

Sony (between 1-2m more) 73 7.82%

Virtually tied (within 1m of each other) 133 14.24%

Nintendo (between 1-2m more) 150 16.06%

Nintendo (between 2-3m more) 59 6.32%

Nintendo (by more than 3m) 104 11.13%

Microsoft (seriously) 15 1.61%

Microsoft (for the lulz) 30 3.21%

Scoreboard 58 6.21%

Total:934

Nintendo could take it unless Sony gets a price cut and tons of bundles in for the holidays. Release and praise of Super Mario is only going to accelerate Switch sales and the CEO even said production capacity has increased.

Don't underestimate new hardware in its first holiday, that's all I'll say.

3DS is a handheld and not a console. I can only explain it in a way that  you are a Nintndo fanboy and want them to win any way posssible, and thats why you are combining a handheld with a console. Sony will lead and continue to prevail, whether you like it or not.

Even the vendor spilits products when reporting shipments, and you decided to combine them in the way you like. Lets also combine the Xperia phones with Sony products cause I can still play games on phones.

Huh? It's perfectly normal to compare shipments like this. A phone is a completely different product. Rol could also add PS Vita shipments but I doubt they are significant at this point. A few years back when the Wii U was failing hard, it would've been perfectly fair to do a Vita + PS4 vs. 3DS + Wii U comparison. The company that ships the most consoles is the market leader.

Vita shipments would be added if Sony didn't hide them. I do make mention of factoring in Vita shipments in my posts, but educated guesses are the best thing we have. Considering that the Vita's baseline in Japan has dropped below 5k units per week (let's go with 250k for the fiscal year) and that the system is doing worse in America and Europe, Vita shipments will probably be in the area of 500k for the full fiscal year.

Yeah, almost thought so. In that case there's nothing you can do. It's going to be fun to watch this sales battle unfold.

I quite honestly think 10m Switch sold is the best case scenario, but not the most likely one. I expect it to sell less.

Switch!!!

Also, this is an apple to apple comparison because the methodology is to use each company's fiscal years for hardware shipments. Now and back in the past.

This is getting really old.. a 'handheld' is not even a thing. A handheld console is though which the 3DS is.

Looks like it won’t happen this FY. I think the Switch might have a chance of outselling the PS4 next fiscal year, unless the PS4 has a permanent price cut to $199.

Imagine the year is 2007 and the PS3 doom and gloom is at an all-time high. Xbox 360 is beating it on all fronts whilst the PS3 is being outsold by GBA in the USA (that actually happened).

Then as a reaction, you go and make a topic and talk about how if you combine PS2, PS3, and PSP, Sony is actually the market leader... what a twist!

Realistically, you'd rightfully be ridiculed and mocked, simply because PS2 was heading into its irrelevance with God of War II being the last major support from Sony themselves. The PS2 and PSP were not devices in which Sony's future would depend on, and that's why Sony decided to lose billions short-term in order to make PS3 more affordable and regain some of its lost market share.

I think this analogy is apt and it means 3DS sales is somewhat irrelevant at this point in time. So this topic is nothing more than a twist of presenting the fiscal results in order to make the outlook of one company better than it may appear.

Though I have to say, this is still way better than using MAU... ;)

But that's how it works! I worked for this site back in 2007 and I still have graphs on my computer showing yearly market share and that's exactly how you collect and interpret the data. You can't just exclude the PS2 from yearly shipments because it's "last gen". We don't exclude iPhone 6s sales from yearly iPhone shipments, either.

That sort of happened.  A media outlet called Sony Defense force began doing just that.  Granted I believe they were actually MS fans trying to make Sony fans look bad but they would compare the "Sony family of devices" against individual competiting devices.

Yep, I remember reading from Sony Defense Force.

It was pretty funny with how they'd exaggerate everything, though they disappeared almost exactly when PS3 started to gain a foothold worldwide. So the theory that they were MS fans masquerading as PS fanboys was not that far-fetched, but I guess we'll never know for sure.

It's a good thing you brought up SDF because Sony Defense Force was considered to be the laughing stock of the gaming community for twisting numbers (kind of like the OP*) to make Sony appear ahead of MS at a time that was simply not the case.

*Rol is twisting numbers here to push a specific narrative, and that's all I mean by what I have written in the bracket.

You'd get mocked for such a thread because the conclusion wouldn't line up with the facts. Here's the collected data:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=230847

The year you are refering to is FY3/2008 (covers April 2007 to March 2008) and Nintendo beat Sony by 14m units. The year before that, Nintendo beat Sony by 6.5m units.

So you decided to completely ignore my point, cool.

Was fully aware that the Nintendo duo were breaking all sorts of records, I didn't need a reminder of that as I was not talking about that specific year in literal sense, but I appreciate your mental gymnastics abilities to bypass the clear and concise point I was making.
