Huh? It's perfectly normal to compare shipments like this. A phone is a completely different product. Rol could also add PS Vita shipments but I doubt they are significant at this point. A few years back when the Wii U was failing hard, it would've been perfectly fair to do a Vita + PS4 vs. 3DS + Wii U comparison. The company that ships the most consoles is the market leader.

Imagine the year is 2007 and the PS3 doom and gloom is at an all-time high. Xbox 360 is beating it on all fronts whilst the PS3 is being outsold by GBA in the USA (that actually happened).

Then as a reaction, you go and make a topic and talk about how if you combine PS2, PS3, and PSP, Sony is actually the market leader... what a twist!

Realistically, you'd rightfully be ridiculed and mocked, simply because PS2 was heading into its irrelevance with God of War II being the last major support from Sony themselves. The PS2 and PSP were not devices in which Sony's future would depend on, and that's why Sony decided to lose billions short-term in order to make PS3 more affordable and regain some of its lost market share.

I think this analogy is apt and it means 3DS sales is somewhat irrelevant at this point in time. So this topic is nothing more than a twist of presenting the fiscal results in order to make the outlook of one company better than it may appear.

Though I have to say, this is still way better than using MAU... ;)

But that's how it works! I worked for this site back in 2007 and I still have graphs on my computer showing yearly market share and that's exactly how you collect and interpret the data. You can't just exclude the PS2 from yearly shipments because it's "last gen". We don't exclude iPhone 6s sales from yearly iPhone shipments, either.
