In its first day on the market, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold over 459,000 copies in the U.S., Nintendo announced today. That figure accounts for combined packaged and digital sales.

Nintendo says that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now “the fastest-selling game in the long-running Mario Kart series.” Mario Kart Wii previously held the record with about 433,900 copies in 2008 during its first day.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe currently has an attach rate of 45 percent. Nearly one in two Switch owners in the U.S. bought a copy of the game.

Oh. My. God. It beat Mario Kart Wii? MKW launched like a year and a half after the release of the Wii on a rather monstrous userbase. This is... wow.

Well, so much for the theory some floated out around here that the game wouldn't be a big hit on Switch because it was 3 years old.

Aside that attach rate being wrong, since it only accounts for March numbers, it is an excellent news for Nintendo.MK 8D even managed to do that at launch, where hardware numbers are far smaller then when The other MKs launched in the other hardwares.

At this point it goes to say, without a doubt, that the Switch is going to be far more successful than the Wii U ever was.

I had a feeling we'd hear something like this.

I walked into GameStop on Friday afternoon to pick up my copy and three other people were walking out with theirs in hand already. I was at Best Buy on Saturday and their stock had been cleaned out.

That's really great of course but in all fairness that's the first must-have title since the launch of the Switch almost two months ago so I don't see why wouldn't most Switch owners buy it.

I predicted 1m but still good numbers.
