Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is nickel and diming us with the Switch!

Nintendo has now fully revealed the Switch, and the reactions have been... mixed. Some positive, some negative and some questions unanswered. But one of the impressions I'm taking away from this is how greedy Nintendo really has become, and how they're trying to make as great a profit as possible with the Switch.

Let's just start off with that I'm a Nintendo fan, and have been gaming on their platforms since the early 90's, and that Wii is one of my favorite consoles of all time and that I bought a Wii U like half a year ago and that I'm loving my 3DS.

First of all, the actual Switch will cost $299 - which isn't all that bad by itself, but considering that you can get a PS4 bundled with Uncharted 4 for the same price and you get NO games bundled with the Switch...

And then you have the new (crappy) paid online service Nintendo will launch this Fall. We don't know the price of that service yet, but Nintendo's online services has been lacking for quite some time, and I'm hard pressed to see them making a great online service by now; they simply don't get how those things work. Example; to voice chat and invite people to game online you need a SECONDERY smart device and an app for all of that. Oh, but maybe they'll compensate by giving some additional boon? Yeah, ONE free NES or SNES game for a month. For a month. You don't even get to keep the game! You're renting it. The other boon is that you get discounts and stuff like that, special offers - but that still involves you giving Nintendo additional money.

And then you have all the extra accessories. A pro controller will cost you $70, an extra joy-con is $50, or two for $80, a joy-con grip for $30, and an extra Switch Docking Station for $90. That's pricey as fuck.

All of this is leaving me with the sensation that Nintendo has become incredibly greedy, and is trying to nickel and dime us as best they can. It's such a sad sight to see. Am I the only one with this sad feeling?

I think they are positioning it as a lifestyle product. This console is a lot closer to the Wii than it is to the Wii U. It will also have a ton of Nintendo games. Maybe they are just really confident and don't want to repeat the Wii situation where they could've easily charged double the price and made a lot more money.

So far, they haven't shown us why we should give them all our money. I do not see the value they think they're offering us right now. Hell, there isn't even enough games announced yet to justify this level of greed

In what way is the Switch closer to the Wii than to the Wi U?

Maybe, but it feels more to me like they've given up on expanding their market and just want to rail as much money out of their existing fans as possible. This looks a lot more like the Wii U than the Wii to me.

I think Nintendo's strategy is banking on its fandom the first year. Switch is overpriced, so they're counting on Zelda, MK and Splatoon appeal to the Nintendo fandom. Also, I think they'll use us as beta testers for their new online service. I expect a holiday price cut. Holidays will be like a true release. The previous months are to keep Nintendo going.

Yes they are. The price of the console is fine, I guess, and add-ons and accessories are always expensive on every console (I just hope the Pro Controller can be used on PC). What I'm worried about now are the online fees and the price of the games. About the online fees I've ranted enough as it is, and the price of the games seems to match full price for console releases, even if some of the games really don't seem to be worth 60€. Plus, you'll need amiibo to access part of the content, so...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I consider trading in plenty of DS/Wii/PSP/PS3/X360 games which I don't care about anymore.

I never traded in games before, but Gamestop currently offers to double the trade-in money if you preorder a Switch.

Nintendo has been nickel and diming everyone since the NES. Guess why they're still in business.

Also it's called "financially savvy".

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Nintendo has always demanded a premium price. It's nothing wrong.
