Forums - Sales Discussion - UK Black Friday: 4k Blu-Ray Does Not Matter!

Does 4k Blu-Ray Matter?

Yes 72 24.66%

No 220 75.34%

Total:292

Optical media is pretty much dead for the masses, the cinemaphiles still love optical media, but they buy a 4k blu ray player with a better sound output than a console could ever deliver.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

4K blu-ray sounds nice - until you see the selection and price point of 4K movies.

Nearly $40 per movie doesn't entice me much. I'll stick with regular blu-ray thx.

^ this. If I even bother buying a physical copy of a movie.

Not sure why it matters to me with games, and not with movies... but I just dont "feel" the need to collect movies physically anymore.

Im fine streaming things, and just watching Netflix and the like.

That 4K BR player effect on Xbox biggest EU market and 2nd biggest WW market, imagine ROTW.

Let's take a look at the numbers:

PS4 - 143k

Xbox One- 93k

BF week gap: 50k PS4

But that gap is not nearly as interesting as the following facts:

Last year X1 sold 134k during UK BF week, significantly down YOY, in its one of the two strongest markets, despite its hyped up 4k blu-ray capabilities and the many great deals.

PS4 has destroyed all the ground X1 gained over the last few months on Black Friday: October gap + September gap = 26k X1

It's reasonable to conclude that 4k-bluray isn't a deciding factor for most consumers. Not now, and definitely not when streaming is the indisputable king.

Good observation my friend. 4K Blu-Ray might not be as great as some might have hyped.

4K Bluray is not the future. It won't take off. Hell, Bluray has failed to kill off DVD yet

That's gotta be frustrating for the ground you gained to be gone in one day.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

This should be some rude awakening for all those individuals (even Microsoft themselves) who said 4k Blu-Ray is a killer feature that gives Xbox One S an advantage over PS4/Pro. People simply don't care about dying physical media; streaming is the future and that is that.

In regards to streaming 4K do you need a specific device or is it just a matter of bandwidth?

It is not. It is *also* a matter of bandwidth but also a software issue. More efficient codecs require more computing power to make use of the bandwidth efficiency benefits. This means that the device must have the power and yes, somehow you could describe that as a "special device".

Electronics usually have dedicated hardware for that (so-called ASICs) which is efficient in terms of power and cooling while other devices just "brute-force" that with raw power (like consoles), if they are capable enough.

Until the person who gets a PS4 Pro as a gift and tries to play a 4K Blu-ray in their shiny new 4K capable PS4. 🙄
