this was all not consumer friendly?

The problem is 360 was delivering similar and arguably superior gaming experiences at a lower price.

Bluray was arguably a mistake given Sony doesn't care about UHD this gen and most games were fine running off a DVD. The Cell was basically unnecessary and Sony should have used a cheaper CPU. PS3 needed the HDD to play many games while 360 could play many of those same games from a disc.

The other features are not why PS3 was so expensive. Bottom line, PS3 could have sold better and been cheaper simply using a traditional CPU and DVD like 360.

It was expensive no doubt but a very brave move by Sony nonetheless.

I ended up buying 360 first and Ps3 later but man those ps3 first years were rough...

More arrogant than brave. They obviously didn't consider Xbox a serious competitior.

But atleast they were a lot smarter when designing PS4.

I paid $599 for my original fat and I still use it. The original 60GB model is a spectacular one of a kind piece of hardware. Just too heavy.

I know, rather than blaming Sony, why don't we instead pin it all on the consumer, that's the best idea yet!.

Or maybe the Cell cost them quite a bit, selling at a loss, pricing too high along with their marketing at the time being rather random. Not to mention that they took out the Linux feature and didn't push that end much at all.

The PS3 had amazing features that were far better than Xbox 360. Built in wifi, blu ray player that cost $1000 at its release standalone, free online and backwards compatibility. Xbox 360 didn't ahve built in wifi and many Xbox 360 games required multiple discs while PS3 games could fit in one disc with superior video and audio quality. Xbox 360's online added more to its price to make it more expensive than a PS3.

Hwoever the console was poorly priced and their PR was terrible. Saying people should get a second job would have put me away from it had I been considering one of the seventh gen consoles.

They got it all wrong.

Bluray wasn't yet a requirement, it was a pain to develop for, it was far too expensive and it lacked committed 3rd party support to back up the extremely poor 1st party offerings. On top of all that, the competition were hitting all the right notes and pounding the PS brand into the floor.

What they managed to do through 2009 and onwards to push the console on with a revitalized 1st party, the slimline PS3 and Move launch to take back marketshare and hit Gen 8 on the front foot however, was nothing short of exceptional.

PS3 had some good exclusives at launch such as Resistance: Fall of Man. Also Bluray proved to be incredibly useful in gaming and it wouldn't have been successful without PS3. Playing games with huge size was more convenient on PS3 than Xbox 360. I don't understand how people didn't care about free online.

But Xbox 360's Live was superior and the achievement system was innovative and really cool xD

PS3 gen disc media vs digital was pretty heavily in favour of physical media. That era is long gone and digital content is a lot more accepted, used and easily the future.

Comparing the 2 is just silly.

I'm not saying PS3 should have been all digital, I'm saying PS3 should have used DVD to keep the price down. Much like the 360.

Bluray and The Cell are the primary reasons PS3 was a massive financial faillure, yet neither had a significant impact on gameplay.
