Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pokemon GO is now completely unplayable on jailbroken / outdated phones

Why do you need a jailbreak? how much free stuff one needs?

My iphone has never been jailbroken though there might be advantages. However, I would always install a custom rom onto my phone when I used android. Cyanogen mod notisably out performs any stock android I've used, it hasn't got any of the bloat, has more os setting and customisations, being rooted it means I can use ad blocking software, it is more up to date and in many cases has proven stabler and runs apps better than stock... and normaly has better battry life.

Of course not all stock androids are equal, but it's amasing how much better cyanogen mod is to the vast amount of stock versons even when you ignore the perks of it being rooted.

While the Pokemon GO folowing has died down significantly, more problems are still popping up. It is no secret that Niantic has been cracking down on players using any external sources to play the game. Any major tracking software for the game is now gone and players will recieve bans for using any remaining ones. But now they are taking complete control over who plays their game.

The most recent update (1.7.0 for iOS and 0.37.0 for android) introduced a few new features including the buddy system, Pokemon Go Plus support, and on top of it all, you can now only play the game on approved devices. If your mobile device is jailbroken or rooted the app will not let you play the game. You will instead be given an error message saying "This device, OS, or software is not compatible with Pokemon GO." Through personal experience I can also confirm that if you are using the APK version on an older device that wouldnt allow you to download the game through the Google Play Store, it also will not work anymore.

There is a solution if you have this problem though. By using the APK links to download the previous version you should be able to play the game just fine with no downsides.

Thennnnnnn whats the problem?

Well that sucks. By the sounds of everything, Niantic is a pretty bad company. I understand they have a problem they need to solve, but this isn't exactly a good way to solve that problem.

This is good. If it can get rid of the cheaters, I might go back.

So gyms were a critical part of the game for you then, I assume? Because that's the only place right now where cheaters can affect you unless I'm forgetting something.

As much as I hate cheaters in games, blocking rooted/jailbroken devices is fucking annoying. Last time I touched an Apple device, it was a 2nd Gen iPod Touch. I really hated that UI and how constrictive it was. Took some guts jailbreaking it then I got myself a pretty decent looking UI. Moves like these is one lazy attempt at stopping cheating.

As an android user, they ask me what is to be gained. Basically customization is what I like. On my old Note 3 it's hard to customize the system UI without rooting. Not to mention removing or stopping pesky unnecssary bloatwares. Good thing I don't play this game otherwise this will piss me off to no end.

Gyms are an essential part of the game. It gives you more stuff to do, like leveling up your pokemons or trying to capture pokemons with strong IV to conquer gyms and winning these places is the only way you can earn in game money without using your credit card.

I wouldn't exactly call them 'essential'. They take a lot of time to capture, the battle system is really boring, and in general they're not very important. If you have the Pokémon to do it efficiently then sure, they're good, but if not, at least I have better use for my time than battling over gyms. And it's not like you even need coins for much. I was happy enough to spend a few euros to get some more inventory space, and I haven't needed coins for anything else. Coins are useful, sure, but you can do just fine even without.

There are so many things to fix in this game and what are Niantic doing? They are wasting their time with something unneccassry like this... :(

I root my android for the same reason, but I use the Eclipse mod as opposed to Cyanogen.  Guess I am now ineligible to play.  This makes twice the game has blocked my access.  Time to move on I guess.

Huh... it doesn't work on Rooted phones? Guess I can't play it... not that I particularly want to though, far too social for me.

Pokémon was too good for mobile, they had to lower its quality somehow.
