Forums - General Discussion - Is there a better tv series than The Sopranos???

The only TV series I liked SO ****ing MUCH that I had to buy on DVD/BD are Prison Break (ALL 4 seasons) and Spartacus (first 2 seasons only - Blood & Sand and Gods of the Arena are masterful).

Around the Network

Shannara Chronicles, Battle Star Galactica, The Expanse, Colony, Star Trek series, because I like scifi/fantasy.

I honestly thought Liam McIntre was a better Spartacus. War of the Damned was my favorite.

Mafia type shows aren't really my thing. I love survivalist shows so im gonna go with Walking Dead. Sons of Anarchy is really good too.

I'm not big on the Sopranos (watched the first season, lost interest in the second), so I don't know how much my favorite shows list will interest you:

LOST (epic)
Breaking Bad (perfect)
Modern Family (the first two seasons are genius)
Preacher (at least based off of its excellent first season)
Burn Notice (good fun)

Also, The Walking Dead is really good right now.

The Simpsons, Seinfeld, All In the Family, The Honeymooners, South Park, Mash, Cheers... there are many shows which were better in their prime. The Sopranos isn't even better, imo, than the Godfather which it owes it's entire existence.

Well I mean The Godfather is probably considered by a lot of people to be the greatest movie of the last 40 years ... so for the Sopranos to be anywhere close is a huge compliment.

I would say Simpsons from season 3-7 are as good as anything, but they've had so many bad/mediocre seasons after that, that is skews things.

One thing I love about Sopranos is even though it's this crime show, it could be incredibly funny at times, incredibly dark, incredibly emotional, incredibly psyschological even. There's just not many shows that can hit all of those, they're usually one or two trick ponies.

Also before The Sopranos, this idea of the "premium TV series" that things like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, etc. have taken on ... that wasn't really done before The Sopranos. Before that everything was a fairly formulaic, low-budget, lower-tier of writing episodic type thing and TV was primarily driven by crappy family sitcoms.

Sopranos revolutionized television to have movie-quality writing and acting, long on-going story arcs without care for the "casual viewer" tuning in and not understanding what's happening, etc.

Breaking bad and Game of Thrones obviously. Other series that are a must watch imo are Fargo, Daredevil, Narco, Stranger things, Wayward Pines and Priest.

I actually watched Lillyhammer :)

Its not as good as the sopranos but its quite fun.

Im surprised anyone here even knows of it, since its a small budget swedish produced tv series.

It was a nice change seeing how a guy starts his business from scratch and how he deals with cultural barriers etc being away from home.

It's Norwegian, not Swedish, and Lilyhammer wouldn't have existed without the Sopranos anyway. The whole show screams "Let's transfer a Silvio Dante-like mobster - played by the the same, beloved star - to Northern Europe". Steven Van Zandt was already a worldwide star for decades before the Sopranos (he's the guitarist of Springsteen's E-Street Band since the mid 1970s). Van Zandt co-produced, co-wrote and scored Lilyhammer. The whole show is a mildly entertaining star vehicle which doesn't hold a candle to the Sopranos.
