Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Windows Update is a joke.

Same here, took a whole day with 2 factory resets to get windows 7 back up and running after windows 10 fudged up my old laptop, which stayed fudged after the 'painless' revert. Why is it so hard to install all updates after a clean install. The only thing that works reliably is the 'get windows 10' popup every morning.

In my last job i had to build some windows 7 PCs for clients and even by using the sp1 version, the updates would take more than 4 hours to install... That is seriously messed up. W10 has a promise to be better since the OS is suposed to be able to use others pcs on the local network to fetch update but i never saw that improvement work properly before i quit that job.

A friend of mine "upgraded" his laptop to Windows 10, then he gave it to me complaining of several problems, mainly the sleep/wake functionality is broken and the brightness can't be changed with Fn keys, he was hoping I'd make it work, and I did. I simply moved everything he wanted from C to D, then I simply stuck a bootable USB with Windows 7 and just formatted C. Now it's time to run the already painful process of updating Windows 7 but nope, let's make it more painful.

What a clossal waste of time and pain in the ass Windows can be.

Why is this even a problem so many people run into ? and why all the solutions proposed are so unintuitive?  If crucial security updates are this hard to obtain, then I should use another OS.... but there isn't any.

Soooo did he or you reinstall the drivers that came with the laptop? Because that certainly wouldn't be Microsoft's fault.

Updated the OP for clarity.

Check ArnoldRimmer reply and the link in the OP, the issue is with windows 7 that tons of people have been running into.

If you don't need Windows-specific functionality (e.g. web browsing is enough), you should try installing some Linux distribution. Linux Mint, for example, is both fast and easy to use.

If you want to stick with Windows though, there is a fix for the slow updates. You need to manually install a certain update, after which the rest will go quickly. Unfortunately I don't remember the specifics, but I have two links that you might find helpful:

Thanks, I have already tried multiple solutions.

Seeing how some of the comments on the article say "it didn't work for me" is discourging enough. I'll just go the recent windows 7 convenience rollup and give the laptop back. I've already wasted enough time.

A lot of Windows 10 bugs are Windows 8 or even Windows 7 bugs that never got fixed. That's kind of amazing. All I can figure is that they just don't care until it affects a certain percentage. It's like the W10 upgrade loop bug that's been there since last summer--how does that not get addressed?

Yeaa Windows 7 updates were a pain for fresh installers and its much improved in w10 imo. I had a similar problem when I upgraded to Windows 10 with the brightness and fn keys not working but then I just reinstalled the drivers for them and bam.

Sorry to hear about your problems tho but thats what happens when one OS is king.

I bought a new laptop a few months back and Windows 10 was running fine. Then there was a huge update that took three hours to download. After that my shiny new laptop turned into a bucket of (insert foul smelling brown paste here). I actually had to go into DOS and reset netsh just to get back online.
Afterwards Windows 10 completely crashed a few days later and I had to reinstall from backup. I lost my graphics software and a bunch of other stuff.
Thanks Microsoft. I enjoyed that.

Fantastic tool to get rid of the GWX and to remove any wasted space on C that win10 would be consuming. I got a bonus 10gb of space on my SSD from this tool, costly space to be filled with files for an OS I don't want.
