Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dark Souls III Review Thread - Meta: 90

IGN - 9.5

If Dark Souls 3 truly is the last in the series as we know it, then it’s a worthy send-off. Weapon arts allow stylish and versatile new moves without tarnishing the purity of the combat system. Lothric’s awe-inspiring locations provide visually stunning arenas for rigorous exploration and fierce face-offs with hosts of deadly enemies and even deadlier bosses. While not all the risky changes land as neatly as others, Dark Souls 3 is a powerful journey and the sequel the series truly deserves.

Gamesradar - 9

It's a persuasive reshuffle of the feature set, on the whole, reinforcing the original's machinery while throwing in a few new wrinkles for veterans. But it's expressive of a game that's more about putting a capstone on a formula than raising the roof. Dark Souls 3 is a vigorous tale of sacrifice and cunning. It is oblique, punishing and gratifying in a way mainstream console blockbusters seldom dare to be. But the fires are definitely dying. There's been some uncertainty over whether this is the final Dark Souls title – Miyazaki has suggested as much, but the endings contain dutiful hints about future sequels. As much as I love Dark Souls, and as much as I've enjoyed this one, I think it's time to say goodbye.

Destructoid - 8.5

If Dark Souls III truly is the last game for now, it makes perfect sense, since it's just as much of a love letter to fans as it is a culmination of the series. I may not have liked this iteration as much as the rest, but it's still streets ahead of most current action games and deserves a warm spot on your shelf by the bonfire.

Gamespot - 8

There are several possible endings to Dark Souls III, and although most are anticlimactic, they drive home the loneliness of the paths we took. The old lords have abandoned their posts, and in the hunt to usurp them, we descend into those dark valleys, and climb those imposing peaks. This is the essence of Dark Souls III: periods of doubt, followed by great reward. The journey may be rocky, but there's a throne waiting at the end.

Polygon - 7

At this point, most Souls players know what they're looking for in a new entry. Your personal expectations for the series will play a key part in your enjoyment of Dark Souls 3. If you play these games for the intense, controller-clenching combat and the excitement of invading other players' worlds, then there's a lot here to keep you busy and happy. But in so many important ways — its world design, its pacing, the technology powering it — Dark Souls 3 falls short of the mark. Do you play for the joy and stress of exploring dangerous, intricately crafted places full of hidden elements and endless side paths? Then I suspect you'll join me in being a little let down with the direction this sequel has gone in.

Game Informer - 9.25

Dark Souls III successfully replicates the winning formula of the Souls series, a wondrous combination of majestic boss battles, incredible layered environments full of secrets, and precise combat that can make other action RPGs difficult to play once you’ve mastered the art. If you’ve never played the series, this is a great place to begin, offering a bit more direction in the early game before opening up. If you’ve already played the series, you can feel confident that From Software hasn’t lost its touch.

Jimquisition - 8 PS4/ 9 PC

Any player who’s been through this mill is prepared to die, but once more, that fantastic beacon of hope urging players to press forward and overcome each obstacle is shining as bright as ever. Because that’s what Dark Souls is all about – perishing, persevering, and prevailing. No game series comes close to doing what Dark Souls does, and Dark Souls III has done it again. It’s an undead favorite.

Metro - 9

But no matter where you place it in your own personal hierarchy this is still an exceptionally well crafted and supremely entertaining video game. Where the series goes from here no one but Miyazaki knows, but if Dark Souls III does nothing else it confirms him as one of modern gaming’s most talented creators.

Oh, Polygon... lol. I'm a bit pissed that my computer doesn't match the requirements to play it, but it definitely looks brilliant. Can't wait to play it! I'll wait until next year.

this deserves to be 92 and Bloodborne 97

I didn't play it, but based on videos and gameplays, saying that "world design" falls short is just ridiculous.

This particular opinion from Polygon "but in so many important ways — its world design, its pacing, the technology powering it — Dark Souls 3 falls short of the mark." seems to run contrary to the opinions of pretty much everyone else who has been playing (especially the world design part)....anyway, looks like another hit from FromSoftware.

Before last gen,I didn´t even know about FromSoftware, but ever since Demons Souls they´ve become my favorite Japanese developer, right up there with Nintendo EAD.

I hope for the meta to stay above 90. But at the same time, I think that some reviewer's serie fatigue and annoyance here and there will push it below that number.

Regardless of what it ends at, its one of the best in the series. I really do wonder how many hrs a few of these reviewers put in, that pologon guy probably got rekt by the first boss on version 1 of the game and thought "yep thats enough for a review"

I know reviewers have limited time, but the Gamespot player poured only 23 hours. I'm not sure if he beat the game. I guess that's pretty much enough time to form a valid opinion on almost the whole package, but still...

Another jewel to add to my PS4 collection !

Great news!Never played a Souls game, but having plaed Bloodborne, Im definely going to play DS 2 and 3.My only gripe with the franchise, and a big one for me, is the storytelling in general. Why it needs to be so vague and unconclusive when everything is done so perfectly? And its not that Fromsoftware cant tell a story.Eternal Ring is a PS2 game from them and it has a really good story.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
