Geez. Made In Abyss is ... brutal. The main characters might be kids and the art might be cute at times but that probably just makes the terrible things a lot worse.

There are some horrible people in this story. Perhaps they're made that way by the Abyss but, then again, maybe it's just that they're strong enough to survive it.

I admit that it has made me come very close to crying.

Edit:  Well.  Never mind the "very close" part.

No shame in that. Shed those manly tears.

I find the contrast from cute to brutal just makes it much worse. I can brace myself for it in already dark universes, but when I'm reading something colorful and fun, only to see a character die, it absolutely destroys me like nothing else. I'm pretty sure I cried more at Going Merry's death in One PIece than anything I've seen in...well...almost anything else. And that was a freaking boat!

Speaking of One Piece, this week (or next given how Jump releases work) marks One Piece's 20th anniversary. Oda included a heartfelt message with the chapter. Made my throat pretty tight. Not enough to cry like poko, but still pretty nice.

Haha, yeah, Super is right. These days I find myself tearing up more often when I watch/read something truly saddening happen xD

Also, that image isn't showing up either. Sadness... ;_;

I'm kind of ... struggling to go back to reading Made In Abyss.  I'm scared.

Have you ever read or watched something and there is this awesome character but you know, based on experience, that the odds are against them making it out alive?  She has been through so much, had so much taken away from her, and yet she's such a good person while still being smart and cunning, but in the reality of creative fiction, that typically makes her a prime candidate for self-sacrifice.  On top of that, all that she has been through makes it unfeasible that she could simply lead a normal life afterwards, which is another typical indicator for that role.

It's one of the things about Fairy Tail that absolutely pissed me off.

This isn't just a battle manga like Fairy Tail, either, it's more of a survival manga where the odds are almost insurmountable to begin with.  Even one of the main characters has death supposedly hanging over them at all times.

That scene crushed me.  I cried like a baby over a ship.  Oda set it up so well that it simply broke my heart.  The man is legitimately gifted and should ultimately be recognized as a literary genius.

I was gonna' make a thread for this but we already have a discussion thread, so here goes;

I'm wanting to get into reading manga, I mean, I do at the moment, but only Pokémon manga which I started reading last year, it's actually really good lol.

I asked a few of my mates who read for suggestions, something not too long, like I wanted to get into the Dragon Ball and One Piece mangas, but man there's so many volumes... thinking about Death Note or Tokyo Ghoul, I've watched the Death Note anime, but not actually read or seen anything of Tokyo Ghoul, although I know exactly what it is, and it does sort of interest me.

Of those two, which would anyone suggest? Or if there's anything else, that you'd consider short in terms of volumes (I'm not wanting to start another huge collection lol) that isn't too... weird (You guys know what I mean! :P), feel free to suggest that too.

Hey kohai :3

I've actually been reading Tokyo Ghoul off and on for a while now. It's really good...but it's also pretty grim, so I have to be in the right mood to read it. It does an amazing job blurring the lines of good vs. evil, and the art style is really good, so if you like the tone I highly recommend it.

Death Note is also good, though if you've already seen the anime, you'll be retreading quite a bit. I do recommend reading the ending at least, since the tone of that in particular differs a lot from the anime ending, so much so that the author expressed disappointment in the anime change.

Also, One Piece might seem daunting now, but once you get caught up you'll just wish you had more. I finally made myself read the entirety of it two years ago, and ended up loving it so much I wish I had even more. Going from a seemingly endless supply of chapters to waiting a week for an update stings.

Haha, I totally get you when it comes to manga like OP. I was reading it for awhile, but burned myself out trying to catch up. I got around to the 100 area before it slipped from me.

I haven't read Tokyo Ghoul, but it has been recommended to me often from other manga readers, so I figure that is a good one. Also, Death Note is a pretty great manga... for the most part. I'd recommend reading it, but since you watched the anime, I don't know how much different it is from the manga. It was one I loved reading though back when it 1st came out. So if you don't mind knowing major plot points, it is certainly a good read.

As for other recs, I can recommend some from my list, though is there any genre you like in particular? I may be able to list more.

One I def suggest to anyone is Koe no Katachi, a story about a boy who bullied a deaf girl when he was young, which caused her to move away as well as becoming bullied himself. It's when he becomes a highschooler that he decides to meet with her again and right his past wrongs.

It's a story I love and can't stop talking about, haha. So maybe you'd like it too? And it's pretty short too.

Doomed.

I recommend getting a cat ASAP. It helps with the pain.

Senpai noticed me!

Yeah, as I said Tokyo Ghoul does interest me, and it doesn't seem to be that long in terms of volumes either, so think I may start there... as for One Piece, I want to get into it, but as I said, the amount of volumes is ridiculous, so rather than buy the books I may end up having to read it online for the simple fact that my shelves only have so much space, lol :P

Any other similar suggestions that are on the shorter end of the spectrum?

Most of my favorite manga are 200+ chapters, so what I find short probably isn't very helpful :P Based on what you suggested, you might enjoy The Promised Neverland. It's ongoing at around 30 chapters so far, and I don't know if there any volumes out outside Japan, but it seems like it'd be up your alley. My Hero Academia is also pretty recent, though it's a fair bit lighter in tone than what you mentioned. Highly recommend both though.

Is there a particular genre you're interested in? Do you have some anime or manga you liked that you'd like to find similar to?

And props for buying actual volumes. I'm starting to do that for collection value, though I like to read my favorite manga as soon as they come out in Japan, so I have hard time building motivation.

Yeah, just like with games and films, I love owning the physical copy of books and comics too, it's almost mandatory for me, lol.

As for things I already like, well I don't really watch much anime outside of Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon, unless you include Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Beyblade lol, back when they were a thing and big in the west, I started watching Attack on Titan but never finished the first series, I went like four episodes in a row without any titan action and gave up, lol, wonder if the manga to that is any better? I've also watched Steins;Gate and Psycho Pass, both of which I really enjoyed, and as mentioned before, I've watched Death Note too... I want to either start watching One Piece or read the manga but if I read the manga it'll be online, too many volumes to keep up with buying, but it does look like a fun series.

Not really sure what genre I'm into when it comes to this sort of stuff, just as long as it's not that weird weeby lolita stuff, no offence to anyone that's into it, but it just isn't for me lol :P

Try Noblesse, The Gamer, History's Strongest Disciple, Hajime No Ippo, BLack Clover and The God of Highschool. You might like those.

Psyren is an excellent, sci-fi shonen. Short, too, as it only clocks in at 16 volumes. Also, it has (in my opinion) the best anime/manga time travel usage outside of Stein's Gate.

World Trigger is another great one that is only about 15-16 volumes in though not finished. The story is strong and clever, and the fight sceanarios are the best I've ever seen executed. The author really understand military tactics and strategy and has enough imagination to cleverly expand how they would function with enhanced abilities/weapons.  However, the author injured himself and hasn't updated in a few months so I would be catious in starting it.

Well, alright, I'll list a few I really like myself and maybe you will too~

Fuan no Tane :  Bite size mystery/horror stories, incase you like spooky tales.

Horimiya :  A slice of life/romantic comedy about a boy and girl with secret lives outside of school and how they meet and learn about each other. Really good if you want some good laughs.

RELIFE :  A story about a guy struggling in society and unable to find work. With nothing else to turn to, he is selected to take part in a program called RELIFE, which allows him to relive a year of high school life to help resolve their issue and gain the confidence to return to society. It has some comical and endearing characters.

Yotsubato :  The slice of life story of a girl named Yotsuba and the things she learns and adventures she has on a daily basis. Really great for laughs. (This seems to be a thing with my recommendation list, haha)
