Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sounds like Link will remain silent in Zelda Wii U

Aonuma, if the game is due out this holiday season then I'd suggest you don't have time to "think long and hard" about that. If there was going to be voice acting in the game that decision should definitely be made by now, and really the decision about whether Link speaks should've been made too.

Personally I can't imagine how voice acting could possibly work in a Zelda game. It would turn the writing from pleasant and slightly whimsical to awkward and cheesy.

The days of silent protagonists are over. What purpose does it serve exactly? It just feels unnatural, to me at least.

Given how far along the game should be by now, I take this to mean it's already decided it won't change for this entry, and that he's talking about future ones.

I hope so, but I think it's fair given his and Nintendo's track record to be a little suspicious when he makes comments like this that the game isn't quite as far down the road as we might believe...

Gotta be honest, if Nintendo came out later this year and announced that Zelda was pushed back to 2017, I would not be surprised.

Appalled, but not surprised.

We have a saying here in Sweden, maybe you do too but...the direct translations is

Speech is silver. silence is golden.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

The idea of no voice acting in Nintendo games was alway something borne out of financial stubbornness. In short, it raises the costs of development. You also increase the file size of the game to epic proportions. Nintendo has avoided it because they don't want to spend the money.

But having said that, at this point, I'm not sure their current IP needs it outside of Zelda and that game only needs it for NPCs. I feel like giving Mario a voice was a bad idea. Back in the 80's, us kids imagined him as he was... a 40 something Italian man trapped in the Mushroom Kingdom. When Super Mario 64 came out, all of a sudden he sounded like a deranged lunatic high on LSD and helium. Luigi now sounds like he's suffering from Down's Sydrome... it's just weird.

So I vote no for old IP and maybe for anything new they put out.

Thank god!

Yeah, basically! I won't believe that Zelda U is going to stick to a release date until I have it in my very hands on that release date!

Good, Link doesn't need to talk.
