Amazing movie, dont listen to the haters.

Why do people hate him so much?

he's honestly not that bad of a director as people make him. His Star Trek movie was the only one that actually convinced me to watch a Star Trek movie for the first time ever.

It's not like he's that great of a director either.  And that's where a lot of counter-reaction to him probably lies: he's not some King Midus where everything he's involved in directing is gold like bullshitters in Hollywood try to hold him up as being.  He's just coming off getting some of these awards after his last directional effort was the terribly disappointing Star Trek: Into Darkness.  And, aside from lens flaring shit up, his visual style + writing (in films) is just in mimicking the people he grew up with: Speilberg, Lucas, etc.  It's all surface-level stuff when given a more thorough analysis.

Edit: I should say that's always been my reaction before TFA.

I don't see why anyone even considers him amazing.

I mean, I enjoyed the Star Trek he directed. However, of course Spielberg and others are going to be much greater. It's common sense

Yeah, I've never really seen an Abrams film that I LOVE. Luckily, the next two movies will be directed by Rian Johnson, who's last movie was Looper, which is a movie I liked quite a bit more than any Abrams film.

Unfortunately, Johnson's only writing/directing Episode VIII.  Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow's directing IX.  Rian Johnson will be handling the film treatment for IX though.

Hopefully, Rian keeps Colin in line, so we don't end up with another Michael Bay Park monstrosity.

To be fair, Jurassic World was really just going for that kind of dumb vibe anyways and I thought it was moderately successful on that front.  Seems like he'll have a couple years to think up storyboards, framing a scene, etc.

For JW, I had to just shut my brain off and ride the entertainment wave lol.

You're exaggerating how proficient she is, she stopped Kylo on accident, neither of them knew she had the force, so Kylo didn't expect any kind of resitance.

"You need a teacher! I could show you the way to the Force..." said Kylo Ren to Rey as they clashed lightsabers.

They totally knew: before that interrogation, Kylo talked to Snoke about "the awakening" on Jakku. After the interrogation (before the escape), Kylo talked to Snoke about her defeating his mind reading attempt, as she "was untrained, but strong with the force." In essence, everyone knows she has the force, and Ren admits that (with no training) she is stronger than him.

I thought the awakening was when Rey touched Luke's Lightsaber? What was the awakening on Jakku? Perhaps, Kylo knew but the visions that Rey had didn't tell her that she had the force imo.

It was before they met Maz, so it actually preceded her touching the lightsaber.
