pretty sure alot of pizza places now do pizzas with a bbq base insteaad of tomato, so probably no you dont need tomato.

BBQ sauce is made with tomatoes. So yeah, they still need tomato

But pizzas can use a creme fraiche or cream cheese based sauce... So no, they don't, hasn't, and won't ever need tomatoes.

Being able to make other bread based foods with different sauces does not a pizza make.

Most pizzas having tomato sauce on them don't make them needed to make a pizza.

Tomatoes are essential
(This should be under politics discussion for the lulz :P)

No, there are plenty of Pizza recipes that have white sauces, or even more interesting sauces (There's a place near my house that makes an Asian Chicken Thai pizza w/ a peanut sauce).

The only correct answer is: No, you don't need tomatoes for pizza.

Sure, you may PREFER tomatoes, or maybe you've never heard of the various styles of pizza. But the fact is, the variations exist. Many pizzas use pesto, or a white cream sauce. And then there's the potato pizza. But they're all legit pizza.

The original classic Italian pizza always comes with tomatoes since it was invented. However in a modern world you can use other, especially Italian sauces as well. A common modern Italian-style pizza without tomatoes is https://www.google.com/search?q=pizza+carbonara . However, many comparable specialties without tomatoes are not called pizza: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarte_flamb%C3%A9e .

Of course you can make pizza without tomatoes, it's called "Bianca", usually people eat it with ingredients like bacon, parmigiano chese, rocket salad and vinegar. Usually Pizza Bianca is a derivation of Red Pizza so there isn't really a white pizza with mozzarella on it but there are a few other dishes that are pretty similar to that.

I eat pizza without tomatoes all the time. One of my faves is Chicken Alfredo with bacon, spinach and artichokes. No tomatoes necessary. Though one could add diced tomatoes if they absolu7tely have to have them.

Tomato sauce is essential but fresh tomatoes, hell no! They just steal away the taste. Anyway, you don't even know good pizza before eating at a pizza restaurant in northern Finland :)

I used to dine at a sicilian cafe that made traditional sicilian pizza ,   the old man always used fresh tomato slices with sauce as the base  it was fantastic ,
